Target: Putnam County Sheriff Steve Fenwick
Goal: Bring to justice those responsible for neglect at Indiana puppy mill
A recent raid on a Putnam County, Indiana residence revealed around 70 dogs in deplorable conditions, exposed to snow and subzero temperatures. They were subsequently seized from the property and a group of rescue operations are doing their best to help the dogs recover. Several residences throughout the state were already under investigation for lacking proper housing for their pets because many froze to death in the recent bout of record breaking low temperatures. Those responsible for this puppy mill must be punished so people will understand that dogs deserve a warm place to live and to be treated with kindness.
Roughly 70 dogs, mostly dachshunds and other small breeds, were left without food, water, or a proper means of keeping warm. Workers at the shelter said they were unable to tell how long the dogs had gone without water. According to police, the residence was being used as a puppy mill to breed dogs on a large scale. When the dogs were brought into For Paws Sake Canine Rescue they all huddled together in warm beds and blankets.
Sadly, in many situations like this, a rescue operation simply isn’t enough. As Sheryl Shafer of For Paws Sake points out, “it’s going to cost thousands of dollars to get these animals taken care of, get them veterinary care and the help that they need.” All of the groups involved are determined to do whatever they can to help find homes for the dogs, but in many rural areas like this many of the dogs often end up being euthanized because they simply cannot afford to care for so many for so long. This is why it is absolutely necessary that those responsible be punished and justice be served. Rescuing dogs from puppy mills is rarely enough. It has to stop at the source, and those who breed animals must know there is a price to be paid for not giving dogs the kindness and care they deserve.
Please sign the petition below and demand that those responsible for the neglect of these dogs are brought to justice.
Dear Sheriff Fenwick,
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Department recently rescued dozens of dogs from a residence where they were kept in absolutely deplorable conditions. They were without food and water or a proper means of keeping warm despite record-breaking subzero temperatures in the area.
Please bring those responsible to justice. The welfare of these animals is no guarantee, as rescue groups will struggle to afford the necessary medicine and care to nurse them back to health. The only way to keep dogs safe in situations such as this is to stop puppy mills before they happen and let breeders know that improper care will not be tolerated, and this must be done by punishing those responsible.
