Demand Beauty Company Stop Supporting Animal Testing

Target: Katie Beauchamp and Hayley Barna, Birchbox Co-founders

Goal: Stop offering products that have been tested on animals

Birchbox, a beauty product company that offers monthly sample subscriptions, has rapidly grown in popularity due to its unique services. Sadly, many of its products are supplied by companies that test their products on animals.

Estee Lauder, Shiseido and Unilever are a few examples of companies that actively practice cruel and unnecessary animal testing for their makeup and beauty products. By choosing to offer these products, Birchbox officials are not only sending the message that they support animal testing, but are also directly contributing to the pain and suffering of countless innocent animals that have been forced into the cruel, heartless world of animal testing.

While Birchbox officials have recently responded to widespread protest from animal welfare advocates, stating that they will consider offering a cruelty-free option in their subscription services, their resolution simply is not enough. The only way to truly protect animals from needless suffering is to stop supporting the companies that continue to test their products on animals. Thank Birchbox officials for their willingness to explore cruelty-free options, but urge them to take a public stand against animal testing by refusing to carry beauty products from companies that participate in animal testing.

Dear Katie Beauchamp and Hayley Barna,

I am writing to you out of concern that Birchbox offers beauty products supplied by companies that test their products on animals. As an animal welfare advocate, I believe that by continuing to offer these products, Birchbox is demonstrating support for the cruel practice of animal testing.

While I thank you for your recent commitment to offer a cruelty-free option, the only way to truly protect animals from needless pain and suffering is to stop carrying all products from companies that perform animal testing. While a cruelty-free option is a step in the right direction, continuing to carry products from companies that test on animals sends the message that Birchbox not only supports animal testing, but is also contributing to the suffering of countless animals.

I urge you to take a public stand against the cruel world of animal testing by refusing to carry beauty products that come from companies that participate in animal testing. I believe taking this step will gain you the support and business of countless customers who otherwise will not spend their money with Birchbox.

  1. Animal Testing and Beauty are a total contradiction in terms.
Beauty = something pleasant, natural, attractive, nice, etcetera.
Animal Testing = something ugly, vile, disgusting, evil, unnatural, unnecessary, etcetera.

  2. I totally agree. As humans if we have feelings, then we should used them and be compassionate. Animals, as any human being, deserve respect and care.

  3. Remember Planet of Apes? “It’s disgusting the way we treat humans”. I hate the necessity of using anumals for experiments. But as a former pharmaceutical translator I can’t help but note that these experiments are very important for producing really safe and effective drugs. Still I believe that some of these experiments (like in cosmetics and beauty products field) are absolutely unnecessary.
