Stop Coyote Killing Contest

Target: Oregon Governor, John Kitzhaber

Goal: Stop Oregon’s annual brutal and inhumane coyote killing contest

Animal rights groups have taken direct action to try and stop an annual violent coyote killing contest that was going to take place in the small town of Crane, Oregon. They took their case to court along with other animal activists to fight to end the contest. News reports stated that the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) challenged the annual event by saying that it violates Oregon’s gambling laws and tried to ask for a restraining order to prevent the event from taking place. Unfortunately, the judge rejected their proposal because it was filed too late and all plans to try and stop the killing were also overturned by the Oregon judge. Additionally, over a hundred of the coyote killing contest participants showed up to the courthouse to show their support.

Since coyotes are classified as predatory animals under Oregon law, there are no restrictions on killing them. The animal rights groups understand this problem, and therefore are trying to stop the annual killing contest by pushing the fact that it violates the Oregon gambling laws instead. The animal rights groups believe that if they take away the cash incentive aspect of the contest, then there will be a decrease in attendees, and this will allow for a decrease in the slaughter of innocent animals.

Making a contest out of killing animals is cruel and immoral. Cash incentives should not be given out to the individual with the highest number of killings as though it is an achievement. Please sign this petition to let the governor of Oregon know that this contest is wrong and there is no place for an animal killing contest in the United States.

Dear Oregon Governor, John Kitzhaber,

Last year, the annual coyote killing contest that took place in Oregon killed over 100 coyotes. People are getting cash and prizes for killing these innocent animals. Killing coyotes for fun and games is ethically irresponsible and obscene. This contest has been going on for eight years and it needs to end now. Although the animal rights group’s lawsuit was overturned for this year’s coyote killing contest, something needs to be done to stop next year’s contest.

This controversy is not good for the state of Oregon. It is horrible to know there are people in Oregon who are willing to make a game out of killing an innocent animal. As the governor of Oregon, you must stop allowing this contest to take place.
