Target: Sangduen “Lek” Chailert, Founder of the Elephant Nature Park
Goal: Praise Sangduen “Lek” Chailert for her dedication to conservation of the Asian Elephant
The Asian elephant is constantly under threat of being forced into logging, begging, or circus work in Southeast Asia, but Lek Chailert has created a sanctuary for them that goes beyond rehabilitation. In the northern mountains of Thailand, near the city of Chiang Mai, Lek Chailert has created a home for abused and disabled elephants, Elephant Nature Park (or ENP), that aims to rehabilitate them as well as give them a safe place to live out their days in peace. With their safety, they are also given the greatest gift of all: companionship.
Thirty-six elephants currently call the park home, but more are being added constantly. ENP is searching for abused elephants in logging camps and on the streets of major cities in an attempt to purchase them. Once an elephant is purchased from an abusive home, it is transported to the park, treated by certified veterinarians, and released to join the herd. In the park, there are several different herds that act as a family despite most of them having no blood relation. The park is also home to over 400 stray dogs from the streets of Bangkok that were also rescued by Ms. Chailert.
ENP also has a tree planting initiative that aims to reforest the once lush jungles of northern Thailand. Since a 1989 ban on commercial logging, Thailand’s natural forests have been recovering, but ENP is trying to accelerate the process so that they can release their elephants into their true habitats as soon as possible.
The park finances all of these initiatives by allowing people to visit the elephants for small donations. While at the park, the visitors are educated in elephant biology, elephant conservation, and are even allowed to spend time walking among them.
This is truly an amazing amount of personal dedication to the safety and care of the Asian elephant by Ms. Chailert and her years of hard work deserve respect and a formal commendation. Please sign below to show your support for ENP, Lek Chailert, and the majestic Asian elephant.
Dear Ms. Chailert,
Your Elephant Nature Park, located just outside of Chiang Mai, is a shining example of what animal conservation should be and is deserving of recognition and praise. The park that you have set up for these elephants is safe, clean, and focused on elephant rehabilitation and development, not making money from tourists like many of the other parks in your area.
The undersigned would like to thank you for your dedication to animal conservation, reforestation, and education. The world is in dire need of more people like you and the work that you do. You have played an invaluable role in protecting these elephants and are well deserving of respect and adoration. Thank you.
