Demand Improved Treatment of Chickens

battery cages

Target: Terry Branstad, Governor of Iowa

Goal: Demand improvement of treatment regarding egg-laying hens

Currently, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Alabama are in the process of challenging a California ban against the sale of eggs laid by hens living in cramped cages. Despite being the United State’s top egg-producing state, the Governor of Iowa disagrees with the ballot and argues that Iowa egg farmers should not have to be forced to make changes to their farm to accommodate the well-being of the hens. The cages conventionally used in many states to farm hens are called battery cages. These cages have a floor space that is smaller than a sheet of paper. The hens are confined and unable to stand up, turn around, and extend their limbs.

There is a reason this treatment of hens is banned in California. Instead of fighting the ban, Iowa and the other five states should be following suit. The use of battery cages is cruel and does not allow the hens to behave naturally. The close confinement of the flocks of hens also increases the risk of salmonella. The farmers and government officials in these states must realize the cruelty in using these cages. There is almost no reason for farmers and ranchers to go against this ban since many consumers are actually willing to pay more money for eggs that have been raised with higher animal welfare.

If Iowa, the country’s top egg-producing state, accepts this ban, then it shouldn’t be that difficult to persuade all the other five states as well. These hens deserve more than the cramped cages they are forced to live in. Sign this petition and demand an improvement of the treatment of chickens in these six states.

Dear Governor Terry Branstad,

It has come to my attention that you are currently challenging a ban that will improve the living conditions of egg-laying hens by banning the use of battery cages. I believe that as the governor of America’s top egg-producing state, you should be more inclined to better the welfare of these chickens.

The battery cages these hens are forced to live in only allows them a floor space that is smaller than a regular sheet of paper. This confines them to such an extent that they are unable to do the simplest things that come naturally to them, such as standing, turning around, and extending their limbs.

Since Iowa is the country’s top egg-producing state, I believe that once you agree to this ban, many other states will follow suit. These chickens deserve more than the tight, cramped cages they are forced to live in. I demand you to agree to this ban and work towards improving the welfare of egg-laying chickens.
