Praise Restoration of Bee Habitat

The National Pollinator Strategy to save bee habitat

Target: Elizabeth Truss, United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs

Goal: Applaud the United Kingdom’s action to restore bee-friendly habitats

Bee and other pollinator populations have faced a shocking decline in recent years due to pesticide use and loss of habitat. Luckily, the government of the United Kingdom has finally made a decision to increase and restore their habitats. With nearly 1,500 species of pollinating insects in the United Kingdom, this project will protect the insects that are such vital components of the agriculture industry.

United Kingdom’s agricultural production rakes in about 210 billion pounds (about 330 billion dollars) a year. To improve and preserve this important industry, the government seeks to protect the busy insect pollinators that make this business flourish. The National Pollinator Strategy will be a ten-year habitat restoration effort with pollinator-friendly objectives such as increasing wildflowers on public and private lands, working with farmers to support pollinators, and raising awareness of the importance of bee survival. The strategy also seeks to improve beekeeping and evaluate the pests and diseases that cause pollinator population decline.

Our agricultural industry would suffer without these small but mighty pollinators. Bees and other insect pollinators consume the nectar within flowering plants. While inside the flower, the insects come into contact with the pollen of the plant. The bee visits various plants and transfers the pollen, ultimately fertilizing the plant for reproduction. Honey bees actually pollinate 80 percent of plants worldwide and 90 percent of the world’s food supply.

By signing this petition, you are thanking the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs for approving such a progressive strategy for the health of bees and other pollinators.

Dear Secretary Truss,

I want to thank you for implementing the National Pollinator Strategy. Bees and other pollinators are such an important component of the agricultural industry. Without pollination, 90 percent of the world’s plant food would not be available for consumption. Thanks to your actions, the health of bees and other pollinators will be taken seriously in the United Kingdom.

As you know, bee populations have been declining worldwide. I hope, through your National Pollinator Strategy, other countries will step forward to protect a wide range of habitats in which pollinators thrive. By working with farmers and private and public lands, you will preserve United Kingdom’s billion-dollar agriculture industry. Please continue to care about these small but important insects. Thank you for your valuable efforts to save the 1,500 pollinators that call the United Kingdom home.
