Demand Immediate Closure of Neglectful Zoo

Surabaya Zoo

Target: Minister of Forestry Zulkifli Hasan

Goal: Immediately close the Surabaya Zoo and relocate surviving animals to adequate homes

The Surabaya Zoo – the largest zoo in Indonesia – is facing an investigation by the government due to the death of a lion who allegedly died from strangulation. The zoo has a vast history of neglect, with several animals dying from starvation or animals living in poor health with very little medical care. It has been nicknamed the “Zoo of Death.” We must ensure that this zoo is closed and that the remaining animals are placed in a caring environment.

The recent death of an 18 month old African lion who was found hanging in his enclosure has sparked outrage. He was found suspended in the air by steel cables, becoming the eighth animal to die in the past ten months. A spokesman for the zoo said that the lion must have caught himself accidentally on the cable, although authorities cannot corroborate the claim, as the lion was cut from the cables, thereby compromising the investigation. While the spokesman seems to think the death was an accident, the Minister of Forestry is not convinced. He believes the death was intentional.

Unfortunately, the Zoo of Death lives up to its name. Included in the list of dead animals are a Sumatran tiger who died after eating meat laced with formaldehyde, and a giraffe who died after ingesting 18kg of plastic that was thrown into its enclosure by visitors. It is estimated that 25 animals at the zoo are dying prematurely every month. Those who are not dead are suffering from a lack of animal welfare and medical care: a white Bengal tiger with a missing ear suffers from spinal problems, 180 pelicans are packed into an enclosure that is no larger than a volleyball court, and a moon bear suffers from a skin tumor. Authorities are now wondering if the zoo staff are involved in animal trafficking since so little care has been given towards these creatures.

It is obvious that the zoo staff does not care about their animals. If they are allowing visitors to throw plastic bags and other items at the animals, then the zoo needs to be closed and the animals relocated to better homes. Sign this petition and urge the Minster of Forestry to order the immediate closure of the Surabaya Zoo.

Dear Zulkifli Hasan,

I am writing this letter to express my concern over the animals in the Surabaya Zoo. As you well know, the death of a hanged lion has sparked outrage, and many people believe that the lion’s death was not accidental, but intentional. I am well aware of this zoo’s record, whose many animals die prematurely because of lack of care. The list of dead animals boggles me, and the circumstances surrounding their deaths angers me.

Therefore, I am asking that you do everything in your power to close this zoo and relocate the animals to adequate homes, where they will not be starved and given medical care. These animals shouldn’t be allowed to suffer further at the hands of neglectful humans, and I’m certain you would agree.

SHAME, FOR SHAME. Someone with the voice and the power needs to help. Dying from starvation, thirst, neglect, eating a can or plastic container you’re so hunger than it twists you up inside to die a painful death with no help…….

Many of us have been trying to save these animals — writing to the country’s government, ambassador and representatives here in the States, US zoos, the organization for Zoos, the organizations/rescues for animals. I’ve even reached out to celebrities who are animal advocites. TO DATE — 1/15/2014 — no one has responded or done anything.

Question is does the minister have any honor, heart. Will be he be coward or champion? Close the zoo, and arrange for the animals to go another where they’ll be taken care of. Never allow a zoo again as its been shown what happens.

Someone with a voice, reach Please Please help save these animals!
