Praise Life-Saving Dog Rescue Operation

Target: Cindy Smith

Goal: Thank Wings of Rescue, a volunteer group in California, for saving dogs from high-kill shelters

A group of Californians with private planes has gathered together to transport dogs from overcrowded California shelters to no-kill shelters along the West Coast. The group has saved thousands of dogs from euthanasia since it began. The work they do is voluntary and the cost of travel comes out of their own pockets. Such a selfless act deserves our gratitude.

Wings of Rescue has become part of a nation-wide faction that works to transport animals long distances in order to save them from overcrowded or high-kill shelters. Last month alone, volunteer pilots transported more than 500 small and medium sized dogs that had been abandoned at California shelters to the Pacific Northwest, where small dogs have a much greater chance of being rescued. Many of the planes used by volunteers cost roughly $1,000 per hour in fuel and the average flight is 13 hours round-trip. The volunteer pays for the fuel expense. Cindy Smith, founder of Wings of Rescue, made a statement saying, “When we take off and our plane is full of dogs that have no other options it’s worth every bit of effort.”

Volunteer Ron Evenhaim has even adopted one dog himself. During a recent rescue operation to Oregon he fell in love with a Chihuahua named Bambi and brought her home with him. “It’s a great feeling at the end of the day knowing you saved these dogs,” he said.

The idea of airlifting dogs to shelters in other parts of the country where they might have a chance took off following hurricane Katrina, when it became necessary to do so to save the lives of the thousands of displaced dogs and cats. Relocating animals to shelters has been a rapidly growing practice ever since, with dozens of volunteer organizations across the country relocating animals by truck, bus, and plane.

Please take a moment to sign the petition below and thank Wings of Rescue for selflessly doing whatever is necessary to save the lives of thousands of dogs that would otherwise be guaranteed a death sentence.

Dear Cindy Smith,

Your volunteer organization Wings of Rescue has given thousands of dogs a chance at life they wouldn’t have otherwise had. The selflessness of the volunteers is truly remarkable. There are several organizations across the country now that work to relocate animals to other parts of the country where they might have a better chance of being rescued, but few go to the extremes Wings of Rescue has.

Thank you so much for your effort and dedication to keeping animals out of high-kill and overcrowded shelters. Animal welfare is certainly headed in the right direction when dogs and cats are shown the mercy and kindness your volunteers have offered them.
