Don’t Allow Oil Companies to Assault Marine Life

Target: Benjamin Friedman, acting administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

Goal: Prevent oil companies from using a testing method which researchers believe will harm marine life.

The Trump administration has recently announced plans to allow oil companies to conduct seismic testing off the Atlantic coast as a precursor to offshore drilling. Environmentalists are concerned that this testing, which involves sending highly pressurized blasts of air down toward the seafloor, will be harmful to marine life. Seismic testing is known to produce some of the loudest known man made sounds, and scientists believe that these explosive pulses may prevent whales and dolphins from feeding or migrating and may separate calves from their mothers.

Five oil and gas companies have asked the National Marine Fisheries Service, which is operated under NOAA, for permits to conduct this testing which has not been allowed in the region for the past 30 years. If the permits are granted, these companies would be allowed to crisscross the Atlantic off the United States’ eastern seaboard, sending out powerful explosive pulses every 10-12 seconds for weeks or even months on end.

These actions will not only likely be devastating for marine life, they could also negatively impact coastal fishing communities and those which rely on tourism. Fishing yields will likely decline, while drilling would surely harm coastal ecosystems as a whole. Sign this petition to make a stand against this assault against wildlife and the environment.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Friedman,

I am writing to urge you to halt the National Marine Fisheries Service’s proposal to allow several oil and gas companies to conduct harmful seismic testing off of the Atlantic coast. These tests will almost surely injure or disorient marine life, especially whales and dolphins who rely on their sensitive hearing to feed and remain in contact with one another. Coastal communities will also likely suffer if this testing causes fishing yields to sharply decline.

The fate of the world’s oceans should not be put in the hands of oil companies seeking to make a profit. I demand that you deny these permits so that wildlife and those who depend on healthy oceans will not be harmed.

Sincerely,
