Save Burros from Being Sold Internationally as Work Horses

Target: Neil Kornze, Director of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management

Goal: Save federally protected equines from being shipped to Guatemala and forced into animal labor

U.S. Bureau of Land Management officials recently announced plans to ship 100 federally protected wild equines called burros to Guatemala, where they will become work horses with unknown fates. The project is a result of deplorable management of wild herds on federal public lands, and BLM’s “solution” to the problem is completely unacceptable and cruel.

Wild burros are currently protected under federal U.S. law, but once the BLM ships them off to Guatemala, the fates of these poor creatures would no longer be up to the U.S. government. It is already known that these wild animals, who deserve a life of freedom, would be forced into animal labor in Guatemala; whether they will be treated well or receive proper care remains unknown.  According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the BLM was mandated to care for and protect wild burros, but have entirely failed to manage wild herds on federal public lands. The ASPCA reports that the BLM has “stockpiled” more than 50,000 wild horses and burros in BLM holding facilities and is planning to ship off these protected equines to other countries to resolve the issue.

Urge the director of BLM to cancel the plan to ship wild burros to Guatemala, and instead implement a legitimate on-range management plan that includes fertility control measures.

Dear Mr. Kornze,

I am extremely concerned that the U.S. Bureau of Land Management is planning to ship 100 federally protected wild burros to Guatemala to become working animals. It is completely unacceptable to undermine federal protection laws by shipping these animals off to another country where their fates would be beyond U.S. control and they would be forced into animal labor.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals reports that BLM officials have been mandated to care for and protect these equines, but more than 50,000 wild horses and burros are currently “stockpiled” in BLM holding facilities due to poor management of wild herds on federal lands. Shipping equines to other countries as a means to resolve the overpopulation problem is unacceptable and violates the purpose of their federal protection.

I urge you to show compassion to the wild burros destined for Guatemala and immediately put an end to this project. Instead, please see that a legitimate on-range management plan that includes fertility control measures is implemented as an effective resolution to this issue.

  2. The only way this is happening is some kind of favor! This is NOT right and WE, USA citizens, do NOT want these donkeys sent anywhere. They are not YOUR property!!!!!

  3. Creatures of the wild should be what they are supposed to be : WILD.
And NOT some kind of a commodity for the human species to dispose of. Show them a little respect, and get on with your own business, I say…

  4. Federal government protection? What a joke! Burros, bears, wolves, coyotes. It’s become a ruthless hinting club & profiteering off of the backs of what taxpayers are paying to protect! Evil. Shameful. I’m embarrassed. Someone put foxes in the hen house! They are not fulfilling or honoring their duties.

The BLM is a joke, has been a joke, and will continue to be a joke. And writing a polite letter to the Jokers will not change anything.

There is a way to contact the correct agency in federal gov to have incompetent beaureaucrats replaced.

You have computers. Look it up.

  9. People treat Burro’s horrible, they shud stay right here & live out their lives on farms. There are plenty of farms across the United States that they can be decided up & given to all the farms, so they can have a pieceful rest of their lives! Ppl seem to think burro’s are stupid- well let me tell animal abusers something…I would save the life of a burro anyday, and have NO PROBLEM leaving your pathetic ass to rot with all other rechat feces!
