Save Dolphins from Slaughter

Target: Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

Goal: End brutal dolphin hunting in Taiji, Japan

For decades, fishermen in the village of Taiji, Japan have used cruel disorientation methods to herd dolphins and pilot whales into a small cove where they are trapped and then murdered. By holding long poles underwater and banging them with mallets, the fishermen create a wall of sound that confuses the dolphins and causes them to swim toward shore. Ropes are then used to separate mothers from their young, creating a panic that often results in the mothers dying from exhaustion as they try to reconnect with their offspring. Dolphins that survive entrapment are either stabbed with long spears or pulled onto a fishing boat and their throats slit.

Despite worldwide disdain for the Taiji fishermen’s brutal treatment of dolphins and pilot whales, Japanese government officials have not put an end to this inhumane practice. Officials claim that the dolphins are killed for their meat. However, dolphin meat contains high levels of mercury, which is potentially hazardous when ingested and should not be consumed by children or pregnant women. They also claim the hunts are “pest control,” alleging that dolphins are in competition with the local fishing industry. Investigators have also reported that dolphin trainers at nearby aquariums regularly participate in these hunts in order to find suitable prisoners for their marine parks.

Regardless of how the Japanese government rationalizes cove hunting, these killings are horrific and must be stopped for good. By signing this petition, you are telling officials that these murders will not be tolerated and urging them to finally put an end to this unjust slaughter.

Dear Prime Minister Shinzo Abe,

I was incredibly disappointed to learn that the cruel dolphin and pilot whale cove hunting practices taking place in Taiji have not yet been banned by your administration. The disorientation tactics employed by Taiji fishermen in an attempt to herd confused dolphins toward shore are incredibly cruel and unnecessary.

During Taiji dolphin cove hunts, mothers are separated from their offspring, then stabbed with long spears or brought aboard fishing boats where their throats are slit. Dolphins have also been known to die of exhaustion as they attempt to escape fishermen’s ropes and reconnect with their pod.

Although government officials claim that dolphin cove hunting provides sustenance for local residents, the meat obtained from murdered dolphins contains high levels of mercury, which can be poisonous when ingested in large amounts. Not only is cove hunting ruining the lives of dolphins, now it has become a threat to the well-being of your citizens who consume this cruelly obtained meat.

Please do everything in your power to stop the barbaric slaughter of Taiji’s dolphins and pilot whales.
