Target: Nobuteru Ishihara, Minister of the Environment, Japan

Goal: Ban the practice of keeping live owls as interactive guest attractions in Japanese cafes

The latest craze in Japan is to allow café guests to dine with, pet, and hold owls. As owls are solitary and nocturnal creatures, having them harassed all day by customers for profit and entertainment is cruel and inhumane. Tell Nobuteru Ishihara, the Japanese Minster of the Environment, to put a stop to this practice immediately and ban keeping wild animals as guest attractions in cafes.

Animals cafes are a trend which has been building in Japan for awhile, but this new concept of an owl café goes to far. Owls are predators and the vast majority are solitary nocturnal hunters. To keep them tethered to bars in busy cafes where they are regularly handled and pet by customers during the day is completely contrary to their nature and cruel to these animals.

In addition these are wild animals and the safety of the guests must be considered. The people going to these cafes likely do not realize that owls are dangerous predators with sharp beaks and talons. They are not house pets and can attack. Often children are brought to the cafes and it is only a matter of time before one of them gets hurt trying to pet a sleep deprived, unhappy, owl.

With lines wrapping around the block to get into these cafes there appears to be little popular support for the welfare of these animals. The Japanese government needs to step in. Demand that Nobuteru Ishihara, the Japanese Minister of the Environment, step in and protect these animals. He must ban the practice of keeping owls and other wild animals as interactive guest attractions in cafes.

Dear Mr. Ishihara,

The recent trend of using owls as interactive guest attractions in Japanese cafes is shocking and cruel to the animals. Owls are solitary, nocturnal, predators and spending their lives tethered in busy daytime cafes is completely against their nature. Owls are not domesticated pets. They do not enjoy the company of people, they do not like to be touched, and they need to sleep during the day not be harassed by customers. While in the wild owl attacks on humans are rare, they do happen and can be quite devastating. These cafes force sleep deprived owls into close contact with humans. It is only a matter of time before someone is hurt and it will not be the owl’s fault. They weren’t meant to live like this.

Mr. Ishihara, it is up to the government of Japan to step in and ban the practice of using owls, and other wild animals, as guest attractions for profit and entertainment in cafes.  It is cruel to the animals and unsafe for the guests. Please ban this practice and stop these cruel owl cafes.
