Condemn National Park Service for Killing Deer

Target: National Park Service

Goal: Condemn the National Park Service for killing deer in D.C. park

The National Park Service will resume using sharpshooters to cull deer at Rock Creek Park, a national park in Washington D.C. instead of using methods like birth control to control deer populations. The park’s deer management plan calls for killings for three years to reduce deer populations.

Stephanie Boyles Griffin, senior director of Wildlife Response, Innovations and Services for The Humane Society of the United States said, “The National Park Service had a much better option on the table, and could have used fertility control to manage the deer population rather than a wasteful killing program. This is a terrible lost opportunity, and an unnecessary loss of life, and that’s especially the case in a community that would have embraced this humane solution.”

Congressman Jim Moran said: “I am disappointed that the National Park Service continues to insist on the use of firearms to reduce the deer population in Rock Creek Park. While the environmental damage caused by deer overpopulation must be addressed, non-lethal options exist that would also reduce the population, facilitate long-term population stability, and pose less danger to the general public. I encourage NPS to work with interested parties to implement an effective, non-lethal management plan.”

Similar immunocontraception programs have been successfully used in multiple trials to reduce deer and wild horse populations in the past. They have been used on Assateague Island, MD and Fire Island, NY by both the National Park Service and the Humane Society of the United States. There is no reason the National Park Service could not use immunocontraception programs at Rock Creek Park.

Killing deer to reduce populations is not safe or humane. Humane methods can be used instead. Condemn the National Park Service’s shooting and killing of deer to reduce populations.

Dear National Park Service,

Please reconsider your decision to reduce deer populations in Rock Creek Park by shooting and killing deer. Instead, please consider using immunocontraception methods that have been used before on deer and wild horse populations with great success. You have even used these methods in the past in other situations.

Please do not shoot deer in Rock Creek Park. It is not safe for park visitors and it is inhumane for the deer. There are many humane population methods you could choose. Please reconsider your use of guns as a population control method.

There is to much killing of animals, without regard to their lives!

  2. Controlling deer population by killing is a brutal process. In modern times there are so many good methods.

  3. why.

  4. A national park killing deer does not sound right. This is disturbing, this is deers’ habitat and this is still a problem to other people. What in the world do humans want from animals. Humans want their cake and eat it too, they are never satisfied. Pity on you.

  5. Michael Guest says:

No more hunting deer in parks. This is unacceptable. National parks are for recreation, not hunting. Let them roam free just like wolves and other wildlife. Help them.
