Ban Sale of Abused Animals in Pet Stores

pet store

Target: John Sweeney, West Springfield Council President

Goal: Ban the retail sale of cats and dogs bred in animal mills in West Springfield pet stores

The animal rights group, Western Massachusetts Animal Rights Advocates, has requested an ordinance that will ban pet stores from selling cats and dogs. The animal rights group claims that the ordinance will crack down on the puppy and kitten mills that provide the pet stores with mistreated, abused, or neglected animals.

Puppy and kitten mills are often inhumane and unsanitary. In these operations, maintaining the welfare of the animals is only second to generating and maximizing profits. Although not every pet for sale comes from these places, the ordinance targets the pet stores that keep these businesses operating with their high demand for animals.

The Western Massachusetts Animal Rights Advocates is willing to make an exemption for pet stores that work with animal shelters or hobby breeders. The group also hopes the ordinance will promote awareness of animal welfare within the community and encourage potential pet owners to adopt rather than buy a pet. However, Council President John Sweeney believes that this ordinance does not have any chance of moving forward in the near future. Sign this petition to demand that West Springfield City Council consider this ordinance.

Dear Council President John Sweeney,

It has come to my attention that you do not believe that an ordinance proposed by the animal rights group, Western Massachusetts Animal Rights Advocates, has any chance of progressing further in the future. However, I feel that you must support this ordinance because it will serve to crack down on the horrible puppy and kitten mills that provide many pet stores in West Springfield with animals that are abused, neglected, and mistreated.

Puppy and kitten mills are often inhumane and unsanitary. In these operations, the welfare of the animals is only second to making a profit. I believe that you should reconsider and support this ordinance because it will promote awareness of animal welfare and encourage potential pet owners in West Springfield to adopt rather than buy a pet. Many cities including, Los Angeles and Chicago, have banned the sale of commercially bred animals and it is time for West Springfield to follow suit. I urge you to consider this ordinance and do everything in your power to see that it is successful.

  2. Denise Smith says:

Ban the retail sale of cats and dogs bred in “animal mills” in West Springfield pet stores!!! West Springfield Government is perpetuating animal cruelty!!!!!! We all know these mills are horrendously cruel and abusive. Animals are under fed or NOT fed, kept in TOO small kennels! The kennels are never cleaned and therefore live in feces and urine. Yes, poop and pee!
    Lets STOP these horrendous practices!!!!!!!!!

  3. As the saying goes: “I’m suspicious of people who don’t like dogs; but I trust a dog when it doesn’t like a person”… I somehow have a feeling a good many dogs (and their friends) would not like your Council very much either (little surprisingly).

  4. 2 kittens I bought in pet stores died very soon after I got them.

My vet said that they suffered genetic problems / lacks that they must have born and ill treated in a cat farm or what ever you call it.

To avoid seeing the pain these kittens endured starting shortly after arrival ,
I since adopt cats and these seem healthy & happy….

  5. Nena Miller says:

I cannot fathom now in this day and age any government, agency or store would promote the sale of “milled” animals. I do believe in keeping breeds pure but I do not promote back yard breeders and people who seek to profit from the sad neglect and abuse that is ongoing in these disgusting breeding facilities. Every piece of our government needs to pass laws banning any animals coming from animal “mills”,

    • Cathy Mcneal says:

There are no pure breeds. Every dog has been manipulated by man from wolves. Its time humans stopped lying to themselves about how every other creature is ours to use and abuse.

  6. Richard H. Hutchinson says:

90 to 99% of pet store puppies come from puppy mills. Don’t believe otherwise. If you doubt this as being true, you can check the internet and you will fine out that it is indeed true. Check out sites such as the ASPCA, PAWS, etc.
