Stop Live-Animal Trauma Testing in Military Training

Target: Australian Defence Minister David Johnston

Goal: Stop live-animal trauma training in the Australian Defence Force

The Australian Defence Force has continued to employ cruel training tactics that involve severely injuring and traumatizing live pigs, despite proof that non-animal training methods have shown to be just as effective.

According to the American College of Surgeons, the use of simulators is just as effective in these military training courses. Realistic simulators can more closely replicate human anatomy, and since they are reusable, they are much more cost-effective as well. Military studies have also found that simulator trauma training better prepares soldiers for the psychological and technical challenges that arise on the battlefield.

More than 75 percent of all NATO countries use non-animal training methods in the education of their militaries, further proof that the use of live animals is unnecessary as well as incredibly cruel.

By signing this petition, you will be urging the Australian Defence Force to finally put an end to its use of live-animal trauma training. There is simply no reason why the ADF should employ these cruel, outdated practices.

Dear Australian Defence Minister David Johnston,

I was incredibly shocked and disappointed to learn that the Australian Defence Force has refused to cease its use of live animals during trauma training. This outdated training method is cruel as well as unnecessary.

Many of the world’s militaries have already made the switch from live animals to simulators for use during their training exercises. Not only is this more humane, but many military experts have argued that it is much more effective in preparing soldiers for battle. Realistic simulators more closely resemble human anatomy, creating a more life-like training environment for soldiers, which better equips them for the technical and psychological trials of combat. Since simulators are reusable, they are a much more cost-effective option as well.

Continuing to torture and kill animals during trauma training is barbaric and cruel, and with the easily accessible and vastly superior modern training methods available, the mutilation of these defenseless animals is absolutely unnecessary.

Please put an end to the ADF’s use of live animals in its trauma training and make the switch to humane, non-animal teaching methods.

  4. The military huh! They are given recognition for how they defend their country but knowing they abuse pigs it goes to show their character. I respect the military, but I don’t respect what they are doing in this way. they know they don’t have to use animals but it is their choice they enjoy it. Remember some people that are in the military become violent and do traumatizing acts because of what they have experienced, but too it is in some of them to this.
