Applaud Efforts to Prevent Arctic Oil Drilling

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Commend President Obama for preventing oil drilling in the Arctic

After failing to reduce carbon emissions and neglecting to repair an oil spill containment dome, Shell Oil Inc. was denied the right to drill in the Arctic for the year of 2014. President Obama revoked the company’s drilling privileges once it became clear that Shell Oil was not taking the proper precautions to limit the environmental damage and simply could not be counted on to drill safely.

Arctic regions lack basic infrastructure such as airports, roads, sea ports, and hospitals, making oil spills and other environmental hazards difficult if not impossible to respond to. Even if Shell Oil had met the government’s safety requirements, the sheer size of the Arctic makes it an incredibly dangerous area to drill in—for Shell Oil employees as well as indigenous wildlife.

Offshore drilling in the Arctic has been a hot environmental issue for decades and the President has voiced his opposition to it during several State of the Union addresses. Thank President Obama for holding oil companies accountable for their actions, and continue to protect the Polar Bear Seas when Shell Oil’s Arctic drilling ban is lifted next year.

Dear President Barack Obama,

I was ecstatic to learn that Shell Oil Inc. has been banned from drilling in the Polar Bear Seas for one  year. The company did not take the proper steps to guarantee safe drilling, and I commend you for recognizing that and revoking its drilling privileges. Had Shell Oil been allowed to drill in the seas of the Arctic Ocean, the damage it could have done to the environment would have been catastrophic.

Please continue to protect the Arctic by opposing future oil drilling efforts and help ensure that this majestic area remains clean and healthy for decades to come.
