Praise Animal Rights Victory in India

Target: Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State

Goal: Thank Mr. Tharoor for working to protect the animals of India from inhumane practices in medical schools

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals-India is recognizing an outstanding advocate for animals by giving its “Person of the Year” award to Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor. Mr. Tharoor has worked to including animal welfare in textbooks, and to change educational practices so as to save countless animals from experimentation. Anytime an active member of government contributes so much to the protection of animals is a significant step, and Mr. Tharoor deserves our gratitude.

During his term, Minister Shashi Tharoor wrote several letters to union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad urging him to institute new methods for teaching medical students that do not require harming animals. In 2012, Mr. Tharoor’s dream became a reality when the Ministry of Environment and Forests instructed all establishments associated with graduate and post-graduate courses in medicine or pharmacy to immediately discontinue dissection and animal experimentation. The significance of this directive is nearly incomparable to any other animal welfare achievement. India has within its borders the world’s largest number of both medical institutions and medical students, with more than 100,000 students at any given time. This means hundreds of thousands of animals are being saved each year from the torture of experimentation.

Mr. Tharoor continues to encourage the director of the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) to consider including PETA’s secondary education-approved programs in textbooks. He said of the use of animals in medical schools, “The use of animal dissection in teaching at the graduate and post graduate levels is completely avoidable.” The official statement regarding the award on behalf of PETA was, “We are thankful to Minister Tharoor for his work and for recognizing that animals deserve kindness and consideration.”

Please take a moment to sign the petition below and thank Minister Shashi Tharoor for his incredible contribution to animal welfare in India.

Dear Minister Tharoor,

You were recently voted “Person of the Year” by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), for your outstanding contributions to animal welfare. In persuading the Ministry of Environment and Forests to issue a directive ending the use of animal experimentation and dissection in medical schools, you have saved hundreds of thousands of animals from torture and death each year.

  1. Becoming Kind & compassionate towards animals & their welfare is something not very close to the Indian culture. So in that essence My Shashi Tharoor is doing is so great and so appreciative. People need to learn to do good deeds like Shashi Tharoor then only the name of India will be in the books of one of the compassionate nation towards the other living beings.

    • Actually, India, through the “Edicts of Ashoka,” was the first country in history to promote a parallel course of human and animal rights — compassion for all living things. This was almost 2,300 years ago. They may have moved away from it in more recent years, but much of that has to do with Mughal and British policies, and those of other historical transgressors. India needs to return to its own true history, and restore the compassion they taught the world.

  2. Thank you, Mr. Tharoor. May all of God’s blessings fall upon you for your compassion and kindness.

  7. Jacqueline Hollis says:

  8. Thank you, thank you.

  9. Any measure that helps our fellow creatures become less entangled in our narcissistic grasp is admirable. They are innocent and should be treated kindly. Thank you Minister Shashi Tharoor for your voice to make it so.

  10. Thank you for doing the right thing by saving so many thousands of animals in India. Not an easy task I am sure.
