Save Tiger from Horrific Conditions

Circus Tiger on Tightrope

Target: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Daniel M. Ashe

Goal: Move Phevos the Tiger out of cramped, unsanitary conditions to a sanctuary in California

A tiger living in a cramped Greek zoo is waiting for approval to be moved to an exotic animal rescue in California. Phevos, who survived a life in the Italian circus, just needs the approval of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service before he can be transported to this new home, which is much more spacious and better equipped for a tiger. Unfortunately, Phevos has already been waiting four months in horrid conditions for approval after the animal rescue agreed to take him.

In March of 2014, Phevos’s partner Athena died after a gaping wound in her paw went untreated for six months. This kind of appalling neglect puts Phevos in danger as well, and it’s bad enough that he has to live in a cramped cage without proper care. He needs to be moved as soon as possible. If winter arrives before he’s approved, it will be too dangerous to transport him until spring. This means that he’ll be stuck in the zoo that killed his partner for several more months.

By signing this petition, you’ll urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to push through Phevos’s approval so that he can be transported to a vastly better home in California at the Lions, Tigers & Bears Exotic Animal Rescue. They need to act immediately or risk the life of this rare and majestic animal.

Dear Director Ashe,

Phevos the tiger is currently awaiting your approval to be transported from a cramped, poorly equipped zoo in Greece to the Lions, Tigers & Bears Exotic Animal Rescue in California. It’s been four months since the transfer was requested and everything is ready for Phevos in California. All that remains is for you to agree to remove Phevos from the horrible conditions that put his life in danger each day he remains there.

You may have heard about Athena, Phevos’s former partner at his zoo. She went six months with an untreated gaping wound in her paw before she died from it. This is how serious the situation is–Phevos could easily die from a similar wound while he’s waiting to be transported to a facility where he would actually be cared for. If you don’t act soon, it will become too cold to safely move Phevos and he’ll have to wait until spring before he can escape his current situation.

I’m writing to urge you to review Phevos’s case before anything happens to him. He’s already suffered enough, having endured a life as a mistreated circus animal only to be forced to live in a cramped cage at a neglectful zoo for 12 years. There is no reason to delay this transfer; the animal rescue in California is ready for him. Please act before it’s too late.

  1. What the USFWS has to do with this?

This has to be organized and coordinated by a well known animal welfare NGO dealing with these issues, such as CEE4life, Born Free or Zoocheck.
