Stop Killing Dogs for Dental Tests

Dog in Cage - Jimmy - Strange Lands

Target: Dr. Christopher Cutler, Chairman of the Department of Periodontics, Georgia Regents University

Goal: Stop the university from killing dogs used to test dental implants

A three month investigation has revealed the suffering and death of dogs used in dental implant tests at Georgia Regents University. Dogs had their teeth pulled out, implants put in, then were killed to take a small jaw bone sample for testing. Tell Dr. Christopher Cutler to stop testing dental implants on dogs immediately.

Georgia Regents University has been sourcing dogs from Random-source Class B Dealers, using them for unnecessary experiments, then euthanizing the dogs. Random-source Class B Dealers are largely unregulated and can take dogs from many places, including “free to a good home” ads placed in papers. It’s possible some of the dogs killed by the university were beloved family pets before ending up in their labs. Once at Georgia Regents, the dogs had their teeth pulled and replaced with dental implants. After the experiment, the dogs were killed and bone samples were taken from their jaws.

In addition, the university has been cited for other violations of animal welfare laws including:

  • Failure to provide appropriate veterinary treatment to sick and injured animals
  • Use of underweight dogs in the dental implant experiments
  • Failure to provide proper enrichment to primates, which then exhibited self injury behavior
  • Failure to properly euthanize severely injured rodents

Dr. Christopher Cutler, Chairman of the university’s Department of Periodontics, denies any wrongdoing, saying the experiments fall within standard guidelines. Tell him these experiments are cruel and unnecessary and to stop them immediately.

Dear Dr. Cutler,

An undercover investigation has revealed that dogs are being used, and then killed, for dental implant experiments at the Georgia Regents University Department of Periodontics. Your department has been acquiring dogs through barely regulated Random-source Class B Dealers. These types of dealers can take dogs they find through “free to a good home” ads placed by well meaning families, among other sources. There is a possibility that some of the dogs used in your experiments were beloved pets whose families were deceived into giving their dogs over to research.  The idea that loving, innocent, dogs could be used for these purposes is disturbing. It’s even more disturbing that you see nothing wrong with it.

The tests done to compare the dental implants developed by Georgia Regents to a commercially available product were not required and the implants you were testing had already been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Additionally, a review of two of the studies by James P. Jensvold, DDS, find that the tests could have been done on human subjects and using the dogs wasn’t required at all.

Dr. Cutler, you must stop these cruel, unnecessary, experiments on dogs and take responsibility for the actions of your laboratory and how they treat all of the animals in your care.
