Investigate Death of Monkey at Laboratory

Target: Mike Young, Acting Deputy Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture

Goal: Investigate the death of a monkey at the Oregon Health & Science University, and impose penalties if any misconduct is found.

Animal deaths are nothing unusual in labs, which is why so many animal rights advocates are so often critical of animal research and testing. Unfortunately, yet another animal has died in a research center. A monkey at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) died recently after being administered the wrong dosage of insulin. The university has stated the employee responsible has since been retrained, though this isn’t the only unusual incident at the OHSU. In a separate recent incident, a baboon was euthanized after suffering a hand injury.

The Ohio-based animal rights group Stop Animal Exploitation Now has responded to the latest incident by urging the USDA to fine the OHSU $10,000 for the monkey’s death.

“How many more monkeys must be injured or killed before the USDA takes action to end the abuse?” the group’s head Michael Budkie told The Oregonian.

If you agree the USDA should further investigate this case, and impose fines if necessary, then please sign our petition.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Young,

A monkey recently died in the research laboratory at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) died after being administered the wrong dosage of insulin. The OHSU says it has taken steps to prevent such deaths in the future, though it’s worth remembering this same institution saw another recent death — that of a baboon that was euthanized after suffering a hand injury.

The Ohio-based animal rights group Stop Animal Exploitation Now has called for the USDA to fine the facility. As the sole federal agency tasked with overseeing the treatment of animals, we urge the USDA to comprehensively investigate the monkey’s death, and fine the OHSU if appropriate.

The maximum fine applicable in cases such as this is $10,000 per infraction found. By imposing this maximum penalty on any possible infractions, the USDA would send a message that animals must be treated with the highest of care.

Sincerely,

  2. Our taxes pay for this crap. Animal labs should be done away with. There are better ways of testing products and other things than using live animals.
