Don’t Legalize Trophy Hunting of Black Bears

Target: Dannel Malloy, Governor of Connecticut

Goal: Don’t legalize the trophy hunting of black bears in the state of Connecticut.

The trophy hunting of bears could soon be legal due to a new bill currently under consideration by the Connecticut legislature. If passed, it would cause horrendous suffering for black bears.

The bill does not prohibit bowhunting or hound hunting. In bowhunting, animals are not immediately killed and instead are forced to die slowly and painfully. Hound hunting forces radio-collared hounds to chase the bears until they surrender or decide to fight — often resulting in the death of both the hound and the bear. These methods are cruel and inhumane.

A paper published last year in Biology Letters on why people trophy hunt revealed that hunters target these animals because “worldwide social media creates for trophy hunters a vast audience to which to boast.” This backs the notion that there is no real reasonable explanation supporting why this bill needs to be passed. The death of animals like black bears should not be viewed as a way to show off or brag. In addition, studies have also shown that hunting does not reduce human-bear conflict.

This bill needs to be rejected by the legislatures in Connecticut. Sign this petition to demand that happens.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Malloy,

The bill that is currently under review in your state that would legalize trophy hunting of black bears needs to be rejected. If passed, this bill would allow both bowhunting and hound hunting of black bears. Each of these methods forces a cruel and painful death onto all animals involved.

Trophy hunters are simply looking for the bragging rights that come along with killing animals like bears. Studies have not proven that hunting reduces human-bear conflict, so there is no reasoning to support the passing of this bill. Death, of any animal, should never be viewed as a way to show off.

The time is now to start protecting wildlife for future generations. Bears are a family-oriented species. Tearing them apart through different hunting methods will cause them immense suffering when we should all be looking out for them.

We encourage you and others involved in the Connecticut legislature to reject this bill and help keep black bears safe from trophy hunters.

Sincerely,
