Cancel Plans for Barbaric Rodeo Celebration

Target: Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montreal, Quebec

Goal: Cancel plans to hold a rodeo festival to celebrate Montreal’s 375th anniversary.

A rodeo has been planned to commemorate Montreal’s 375th anniversary. The festival will feature bucking broncos as well as other cruel acts. Nearly 600 veterinarians recently signed a letter calling for the rodeo to be scrapped due to animal welfare concerns, as well as concerns about the legality of the event. Per Quebec’s 2015 Animal Welfare and Safety Act, animals are sentient beings that deserve proper care. The legislation outlaws any actions that “cause a animal to be in distress.”

Rodeos can be cruel and even deadly for the animals forced to perform in them. Electric prods, spurs, and bucking straps are used to irritate and enrage animals in rodeos, which can be ridden, forced to the ground, and tied up in events. According to Alanna Devine, director of animal advocacy for the SPCA, though the bucking of a horse is natural, it’s a reaction to “stress or an unpleasant sensation.”

Animals in rodeos face extreme stress by being ridden, roped, or otherwise abused. Add to this a screaming crowd and loudspeakers with blaring announcements and music, the potential for injury and even death, and rodeos become a cruel event that should be banned all over the world. Sign below to demand that the mayor cancel plans to bring in a rodeo for Montreal’s 375th anniversary.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mayor Coderre,

A rodeo has been planned for Montreal’s 375th anniversary celebration. Rodeos can be cruel and even deadly for the animals forced to perform in them. Electric prods, spurs, and bucking straps are used to irritate and enrage animals in rodeos, which can be ridden, forced to the ground, and tied up in events. So far, nearly 600 veterinarians have spoken out about the cruelty of rodeos.

This event could even be against Quebec’s newest animal welfare legislation, which outlaws events that “cause animals to be in distress.” Being ridden, roped, and forced to perform in loud and crowded environments is certainly stressful to an animal. There is even the potential for the animals to be injured or killed. For this reason, we ask you to cancel the planned rodeo and find a humane alternative that doesn’t promote the exploitation of animals.

Sincerely,
