Free Elderly Elephant From Chains and Retire Him to a Sanctuary

Target: Bhagat Sarjan, Principle Chief Conservator of Forests of Maharashtra Forest Department

Goal: Free Gajraj the elephant from his chains and bring him to an accredited sanctuary.

Gajraj is a 63-year-old elephant that was stolen from the wild when he was 12 years old and has been languishing in captivity ever since. The years of abuse and neglect are taking its toll on Gajraj, and it is time to bring him to an accredited sanctuary where he can happily live out the rest of his days.

Gajraj is currently chained up on a small slab on concrete. The captivity, chains, concrete and isolation reportedly cause many physical and mental health problems for Gajraj including, but not limited to, painful abscesses where the chains constantly rub into his now raw skin, broken and overgrown nails on all four of his feet, and stress signs including excessive swaying and bobbing.

It is time to bring Gajraj the happiness he deserves. Sign this petition and demand that Gajraj is moved to an accredited sanctuary where he can live out the rest of his days chain-free and surrounded by friends, nature and sunshine.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Sarjan,

Gajraj the elephant has been under the care of Ms. Gayatridevi Bhagwantrao Pantpratinidhi for nearly 51 years, since his capture from the wild when he was 12 years old. However, Ms. Gayatridevi has now left Gajraj chained up and alone to die because she considers him too old and too sick. It is time to bring Gajraj to an accredited sanctuary where he can finally experience happiness again after being deprived of it for over 50 years.

Gajraj currently lives on a small slab on concrete. The smell of urine and feces is apparently overwhelming, and he is unable to escape due to the chains. The years of abuse, neglect and exploitation have taken its toll on Gajraj as he reportedly suffers from many physical and mental health problems. According to witnesses he has raw skin and painful abscesses where the chains shackle at his feet, he has overgrown and broken nails on all four of his feet, and he constantly displays stress signs including excessive swaying and bobbing.

Please rescue and free Gajraj from his chains and bring him to an accredited sanctuary where he can happily live out the rest of his days as nature intended. No animal should needlessly suffer like this.

Sincerely,

  6. There is no excuse!!!! Gajraj, taken from his home, exploited greedily as a tourist attraction by his “custodian”, imprisoned and forced to “perform” to get her money, the LEAST she could do is attend to his injuries and health, but no. Somebody ARREST this woman – throw her in a cell, preferably with chains on, rubbing legs and ankles raw, wounds ignored and left untreated. No problem, She could “perform” for her food, living off unhealthy, sweet “treats” tourists throw her…. India, WAKE UP – STRENGTHEN your animal anti-cruelty/protection laws, you have a miserable reputation…miserable. MISERABLE. Stop the ignorance. Please RELEASE Gajrai to a sanctuary where he will finally have a chance to recover from the constant abuse.
