Applaud Ban on Construction Next to Zoo

Target: Judge Arnon Darel, Jerusalem District Court

Goal: Thank judge for scrapping plans for loud and harmful construction next to a zoo.

A judge has scrapped approval for the construction of a new neighborhood next to a zoo. Because of testimony from rights group Let the Animals Live and residents, the Jerusalem District Court heard that the noise and dust from the construction would disturb the hundreds of animals housed at the Biblical Zoo. Instead of caving to the greed of developers, the court has upheld the animals’ right to live with some degree of peace.

Certain birds, such as parrots, are extremely sensitive to dust and pollutants in the air. Moreover, most animals are disturbed by the loud noises and the vibrations in the ground that would be caused by construction. Animals in zoos are already subjected to the stress of captivity, and do not need more stress added to their lives.

According to the judge, the animals “do not need to be exposed to the tortures of living next to a huge construction site, without any possibly of escape. The right to a life of minimal suffering — even for animals — is more important than real estate gains.”

This court put the needs of animals ahead of profit. This is a rare stance in today’s world, which often prioritizes money at the cost of the well-being of living creatures. Sign the petition below to thank the judge for upholding the rights of these animals.

Dear Judge Arnon Darel,

Plans for the construction of a new neighborhood next to a zoo have been halted in consideration for the well-being of the hundreds of animals kept at the zoo. This is due to the fact that the loud noise and vibrations caused by construction would disturb the animals, which are already under stress from being kept in captivity. Furthermore, the dust from the construction could harm some animals with sensitive respiratory systems, such as parrots.

This decision, which puts the welfare of animals ahead of corporate interests, is rare in today’s world, where people tend to put profitability ahead of the environment and wildlife. We, the undersigned, applaud this decision, which will safeguard the rights of the animals in the Biblical Zoo.
