Target: U.S. Congress
Goal: Protect our environment and wildlife by preserving the Antiquities Act.
The Antiquities Act is one of our nation’s most valuable conservation tools that allows any president to designate federal lands and waters as national monuments for their historic, scientific or scenic significance. This law has been critical to the creation of our National Park System. Muir Woods National Monument, Grand Canyon National Park, and Statue of Liberty National Monument were all designated and protected under the Antiquities Act. Since its passage in 1906, this bipartisan law has been used by sixteen U.S. Presidents, eight Republicans and eight Democrats, to declare 149 national monuments.
Please sign our petition today asking Congress to oppose any bills or amendments that intend to undermine the Antiquities Act, or prevent the preservation of areas designated under it.
Dear Members of Congress,
For over one hundred years, the Antiquities Act has been used as a bipartisan conservation tool. With the exception of the Organic Act of 1916, no law has had more influence over the development of the modern National Park System. The act protects federal lands that make up the cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic resources that are our national legacy.
National monuments are also important because they provide economic benefits to the local communities. Regions surrounding national monuments have seen increased economic benefits such as improvement in employment and increased per-capita income after a monument designation.
I urge you to support the Antiquities Act, safeguarding America’s special places, and oppose any amendments or bills that seek to undermine this important law and the future preservation of and access to our national heritage.
