Praise Smartphone App that Reports Animal Abuse

Target: Edward Horcasitas, Founder of ICE BlackBox

Goal: Thank organization for launching a new feature on its smartphone app that will allow users to document and report crimes against animals

A new phone app has been created that will allow users who suspect animal abuse or neglect to report it to local authorities immediately. Apps similar to this already exist for human-related crimes, but this is the first of its kind for non-humans, which could dramatically improve the ways in which crimes against animals are handled, and deserves our gratitude.

The National Sheriff’s Association and the Humane Society of the United States partnered to launch a new feature of ICE BlackBox app for your smartphone. The app allows you to record video of animal cruelty and share it with law enforcement, so they can investigate, and prosecute. ICE stands for In Case of Emergency and the idea behind it is simple: “When bad guys know they are being watched they go somewhere else. ICE BlackBox turns your smartphone into a personal surveillance camera wherever you are.” With the press of a button, the app sends your video, audio, and GPS information to ICE BlackBox’s secure cloud where the information is then used to contact law enforcement. The videos are also viewable to the public on the organizations website within 30 seconds of being submitted.

ICE BlackBox was created to reduce violent crime and can be used document everything from rape to bullying at school. Now animals will also be protected. John Thompson, executive director of the National Sheriffs’ Association said: “Animal cruelty is a serious crime that is often associated with violence to people and we are using the latest in technology to help catch animal abusers in the act. We encourage everyone who has a smartphone and cares about protecting animals and our communities to download this new app.”

The FBI recently began to include animal cruelty offenses in the Uniform Crime Report and now all animal cruelty data will be recorded in federal crime reports, which means that there is now more incentive than ever for law enforcement to treat crimes against animals as seriously as any other violent crime. This new app could dramatically change number of cases of animal cruelty that actually result in investigation and prosecution. Please take a moment to sign the petition below and thank Edward Horcasitas and ICE BlackBox for leading the way in giving animals equal protection.

Dear Mr. Horcasitas,

The National Sheriff’s Association and the Humane Society of the United States recently announced they would be making an addition to your ICE BlackBox app that will allow users to report acts of animal cruelty. This is an extraordinary moment for animal cruelty, as it will allow citizens to actively protect animals and participate in the investigation and prosecution of perpetrators of crimes against animals.

This couldn’t have come at a better time than following the FBI’s decision to include animal abuse in the Uniform Crime Report. Thank you so much for your commitment to protecting all of society, not just humans.
