Target: Ryan Zinke, Interior Secretary
Goal: Put the manatee back on the nation’s endangered species list and protect it from extinction.
The manatee has recently been removed from the endangered species list due to an increase in its population. However, now that it is removed, it is once again at risk of extinction because the protections that have thus far kept the species alive no longer apply.
One of the major causes of death for the manatee are speed boats. Now that the manatee is removed from the endangered species list, regulations on speed boats and other protections could be weakened. If this happens, the manatee will once again disappear from our oceans.
Florida lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have joined together to save the manatee. Led by Representative Vern Buchanan, a Republican, they have petitioned the Department of the Interior to put the manatee back on the endangered species list. Sign the petition and join them in their efforts.
Dear Mr. Zinke,
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have thought it appropriate to remove the manatee from the endangered species list. However, this action has once again put the manatee at risk.
Because it is no longer on the list, the manatee is at risk of losing all of its protections. We cannot let this happen. We cannot put the manatee back at risk of extinction. I ask that you listen to the representatives and other Americans who have petitioned you and add the manatee back on the endangered species list.
