Target: Alison Eastwood, Founder of the Eastwood Ranch Foundation
Goal: Thank Alison Eastwood for raising funds and awareness to help chimpanzees retire from research laboratories
Recently, 110 chimpanzees from the New Iberia Primate Lab were sent to America’s only national chimpanzee sanctuary, Chimp Haven. Their move was due to the tireless efforts of animal rights activists who celebrated when the National Institutes of Health announced that a majority of captive chimps would be permanently released and retired from research labs.
Like many nonprofit organizations, Chimp Haven struggled to raise enough funds to expand its facilities and pay for the care of the new arrivals. To help pick up the slack, actress and director Alison Eastwood, daughter of the legendary Clint Eastwood, began raising money to help the sanctuary.
“I first got involved through working on my Nat Geo Wild show, ‘Animal Intervention.’ That was the first time I was introduced to animal sanctuaries in general,” explained Alison Eastwood. “I wanted to do more than just support them on the peripheral when I heard about all the research chimps and learned Chimp Haven was responsible for taking the chimps. Launching a crowdfunding campaign was a good way for me to get my feet wet in this debate and do something to help these specific animals and also to get people thinking about whether there is an alternative way.”
Alison is raising $50,000 for continuing chimp care, and 100 percent of donations will go towards giving medical research chimps a better life in retirement. After witnessing the horrific situations that animals were placed in across the country while directing her Nat Geo Wild show, she started her own nonprofit, the Eastwood Ranch Foundation.
“Celebrity helps us leverage support from other donors and gain greater publicity for our cause,” explained Ruth Frazier, Chimp Haven’s Chief Development Officer.
Sign the below petition to thank Alison Eastwood for using her celebrity status to help raise funds and awareness for retired lab chimps in need of medical care and kindness. Encourage Alison to continue reaching out to her network to promote this and other animal rights cases into the future.
Dear Ms. Eastwood,
Thank you for stepping in to support chimpanzees that have been used and abused in medical research laboratories. Your crowdfunding campaign will help provide professional attention, medical care, and enrichment programs to hundreds of beautiful creatures.
However, there is much work left to be done since there are more than 300 retired, federally owned chimps are still living in laboratories around the country. I am urging you to reach out to your network to continuing supporting these vulnerable animals long after this campaign is over to give them the peace and safety they deserve.
