Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Thank President Obama for changing laws to help save the right whales
President Obama recently agreed to keep enforcing shipping speed limits in ecologically sensitive areas. This is great news for the Right whale, as the risk of boat collision is one of the leading threats to this species. Not only does this move protect these animals but it also sends the message concerning the importance of protecting our wildlife. Commend President Obama for helping to save the right whales and portraying the need for taking care of our marine life.
Right whales are, unfortunately, common victims of boat collision. These animals tend to swim more slowly than other whale species and spend a large amount of time near the surface of water, making them more likely to fall victim to speeding ships. Given there are fewer than 500 right whales left in existence, any action taken to protect these creatures is incredibly valuable.
The speed limit law is an extension of one set in place approximately five years ago. This law works – since its enactment, there have been no recorded deaths of right whales in the designated areas. The reduced speeds in these areas allow the ships more time to stop and turn, as well as giving the right whales more warning so pods have time to move to safer waters.
Commend President Obama for helping to save the right whales and for setting the precedent of respecting the lives of animals in the wild. Commerce should not come at the price of animal conservation; instead, a balance must be found. By slowing the ships in known ecologically sensitive areas, ships can still make their deadlines and animals are further protected in their natural habitat.
Dear President Obama,
I learned about your extension of the law to help save the right whales. Given there are less than 500 right whales left in existence, any action to help protect them is incredibly valuable. Thank you for working to save the whales and for setting an example of the importance of animal conservation.
In the last five years this law has been in place, not a single whale death has been recorded in designated areas. Clearly this is a marker of success, in finding a balance between the success of commerce and the continuation of the right whale species.
Thank you for your actions in helping save these animals.
