Protect Grizzly Bears from Hunting

Target: British Columbia’s Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations

Goal: Prevent expanded grizzly bear hunting in British Columbia

British Columbia may soon allow trophy hunters to kill grizzly bears in two large, currently protected areas. Thanks to their status as a “threatened” species, Grizzly bears are protected in the United States. Still, they face ongoing threats from roads, logging, and poaching in their habitats. We must urge the British Columbia government to reduce the area of grizzly bear hunting, not expand it.

In a recent interview with Seattle PI, bear researcher Kyle Artelle expressed his concerns about the accuracy of the research conducted by the Ministry of Forests, which states that the grizzly bear population could sustain increased hunting. Artelle says, “What they don’t have a handle on is unreported kills such as poaching. There’s high uncertainty as to population estimates.”

Trophy hunting is an appalling sport, in which hunters save a piece of the slain animal as a memento. It is cruel and unnecessary, especially in the case of a “threatened” species. The British Columbia government is considering input from the public on the proposed trophy hunting regions. Now is our chance to reduce the legal bear hunting area and stop all plans to expand it.

Dear British Columbia Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations,

I am asking you to stop all plans to expand the grizzly bear hunting region and open up new areas to trophy hunters. In the United States, Grizzly bears are considered a “threatened” species under the Endangered Species Act. They already face ongoing threats from roads and logging in their habitats, as well as illegal poaching. Please don’t allow trophy hunters to kill these beautiful animals for sport.

Research suggests that the British Columbia grizzly bear population cannot support the additional threat of trophy hunting as “there’s high uncertainty as to population estimates.” In fact, with all of the threats that face the grizzly bear, more of their habitat should be declared “protected” in order to save them from the threat of extinction.

I am encouraging you to prevent the expansion of the grizzly bear hunting region.

It is OUR duty and obligation to protect the species. MUST man destroy all that is beautiful, good and not his to destroy. Man causes wars, destroys land, the water and air needed to survive, causes the extinction of species for no reason but greed, sloth, fear, selfishness, blood lust. A destructive species to all!
