Applaud Musicians for Canceling Sea World Performances

Target: Willie Nelson, Heart, and The Barenaked Ladies, Musical Performing Artists

Goal: Applaud musicians for canceling performances at Sea World after learning of captive animal abuse

Sea World is more than just a marine amusement park; it’s a concert venue and allegedly a breeding ground for animal abuse. The rock bands, Heart and The Barenaked Ladies, and country singer, Willie Nelson, were scheduled to perform at Sea World in Orlando, Florida in February. However, the recent documentary, “Blackfish,” has raised questions about Sea World’s treatment of captive whales and prompted the musicians to cancel their upcoming shows.

The documentary, “Blackfish,” documents incidences of captive killer whales that act aggressively towards human trainers and other whales. These musicians were scheduled to be part of the Sea World’s Brew & Barbecue music series, which is held over several weekends at the park. Sea World executives insist that there is little truth to the allegations made by animal extremist groups, and that they are misinformed. Several of these musicians acknowledged that this is a complicated issue, but that they simply don’t feel right about performing at Sea World at this time.

Sign the below petition to applaud Willie Nelson, The Barenaked Ladies, and Heart for showing their support for animal rights and distancing themselves from institutions that exploit animals for profit. Joan Jett has also requested that Sea World stop playing her song, “I love rock and roll,” as the opening music for killer whale shows. The world pays attention when famous musicians take a public stand. These musicians have made a huge statement against animal abuse, and they deserve our utmost respect.

Dear Mr. Nelson and members of Heart and The Barenaked Ladies,

Thank you for taking a stand and canceling your shows at Orlando’s Sea World Brew & Barbecue music series. Even though the allegations against Sea World are still being investigated, you did the right thing by following your instinct and distancing yourself and your music from a potentially abusive situation.

I am urging you to vocalize your stance on captive whale abuse so that other performers scheduled for the music series can follow in your footsteps. Please take the time to learn more about captive whales through Sea World and through independent, reputable sources. In this way, you can be an informed supporter of the killer whale population and influence your peers and followers to do the same.
