Demand National Park Stop Slaughtering and Serving Bison for Consumption

Goal: End the slaughter of bison for consumption at Yellowstone National Park restaurants.

National parks should not slaughter and sell the animals they are meant to be protecting. It doesn’t make sense to spend thousands of dollars on the protection of an animal species and then sell it as meals for guests. Bison freely roam the landscape of Yellowstone National Park and are a favorite animal for tourists to come and see. But these bison aren’t truly safe if they are served up as tenderloin for guests staying at the park lodges. For a national park trying to promote conservation and the appreciation of a species, selling food made from the animals that are under its protection makes no sense.

Guests are given a rather impressive menu at all of the lodges currently on the national park’s property. These menus include animals that guests may have seen while out touring the lands. Bison tenderloin is just one of the options for a wild game dinner.

Bison faced an uncertain future due to cross breeding and hunting. Yellowstone National Park was one of the leading programs to bring these animals back from potential extinction. Retaining genetic purity in wild bison herds is still a concern and a key to this species’ survival. Rather than helping raise awareness and respect for this beautiful animal, Yellowstone is culling them and then selling them as meals. This doesn’t promote conservation. It promotes seeing bison as commodities to be used for making money rather than as animals that need our protection.

The selling of bison meat needs to end. A national park cannot promote conservation through the selling of treasured animals as food. Yellowstone National Park should offer a menu that reflects the mission of conservation.


Dear Director Hoeninghausen,

Bison are treasured animals of Yellowstone National Park that thousands of people come to see every year. Over the years, Yellowstone has been a leading force in the conservation of this animal species. However, by selling bison tenderloin at lodges all over the park, you are no longer promoting conservation. Bison are no longer being seen as an important part of the environment nor as an animal that people should fight to protect. Instead, they are seen as a tasty meal and completely disposable. This does not reflect the message that Yellowstone is trying to spread.

Bison are in need of our protection and conservation. Guests don’t need to be eating an animal that was once facing a dark future. We should be celebrating the bison’s comeback by promoting their success and continued protection. Show park guests that Yellowstone is committed to conservation by no longer serving bison as a menu item.
