Protect Pigs from Cruelty and Neglect

Target: Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz

Goal: Protect pigs and other farm animals from abuse

A video was recently released to the public featuring pigs being kicked and repeatedly hit with a club at the Western Hog Exchange facility in Red Deer, Alberta. Without strict federal regulation of farm animal transport, future farm animals are in danger of this happening again.

The video was released by Mercy for Animals Canada, and also features pigs limping and being stuffed into corrals. Certain groups such as Alberta’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have started looking into the incident, but until federal oversight is pushed, nothing but public outrage is stopping this from occurring in the future.

Farm animal transportation laws are due for a much-needed update. While most of the the western world requires transported animals to have access to food, water and rest after eight hours, Canada’s regulations allow them to be transported for 52 hours without this access. Additionally, some animals are not always equipped to handle Canada’s climate and there are no rules in place for this issue either.

The Western Hog Exchange says it takes full responsibility for what occurred, but this is not enough to stop the future abuse of animals.  Canadian Food Inspection Agency inspectors were at the site to ensure that the animals were in accordance with the Humane Transportation laws. Clearly, something needs to be changed.

Canada needs to implement and enforce severe fines and punishment for cases of animal cruelty like this. Without such action, the humane transport of animals is in jeopardy.

Please urge Agricultural Minister Gerry Ritz to implement strict regulations for transporting pigs and other farm animals to stop future cruelty and neglect.

Dear Mr. Ritz,

The horrific video featuring abuse to pigs at the Western Hog Exchange facility clearly shows that more federal regulation of animal transportation is needed. Not only was the flagrant animal abuse disturbing, it also brings attention to the outdated regulations of neglect and cruelty that farm animals experience during transportation.

As I’m sure you know, Canada’s climate can bring harsh conditions, and not all animals being transported are able to handle these conditions. Additionally, Canada’s law allows animals to go 52 hours without water, rest, or food, while the rest of the western world doesn’t allow any longer than eight hours.

Please recognize that this issue is serious and can certainly arise again if proper regulations are not put in place. The well being of these animals is important and cannot be ignored. I urge you to update animal transportation laws in order to ensure that these heinous acts to never occur again.

Kay Allen, how right you are-the human race is disgusting. The only way to stop farm animal abuse is to STOP EATING MEAT!!!I don’t eat animals and nobody else should.

  3. I agree if everyone stopped eating burgers and bacon the demand for it would drop. Animals need help and i take pride and dont eat that crap it will kill you when u get old. Prevention is the best .

  4. A fine state of affairs! Have those human ‘pigs’ endure some of the treatment they reserve defenceless animals, if not all of it, I say! An eye for an eye…

  5. What can I say!!
    Sick sick sick!!
Very didcraseful behaviour for any human being!!
God created animal and man to live side by side not to take advantage of a beautiful creature to the extent of extinction and harming them to pain and suffering !!
How awful has man become to use animals in this way!!
I hope they forgive us as they do not deserve this treatment!!
    X x ..

It’s about time people took a closer look at the Canadians, who love to pose as morally superior to their neighbors to the south of them.

For God’s sake, these are the seal butchers! They have no sense of morality!
