Target: Mr. Richard A. Brown, Queens District Attorney
Goal: Demand the maximum punishment under the law for the man who allegedly threw a dog off a seventh-floor balcony.
A man allegedly killed a 12-year old pug during a dispute with his ex-girlfriend about who would care for the dog. In a senseless killing, the dog was allegedly thrown off a seventh-floor balcony and later stuffed in an ice-filled box and dumped in a nearby garbage bin. The man changed his story a few times, in an apparent attempt to get away with his cold-hearted act. He was nonetheless charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, and his next court appearance is already scheduled. Therefore, it is important to make sure that this senseless killing is not forgotten and the perpetrator receives the maximum punishment under the law.
Yuk Cheung and Jennifer Chan shared an apartment in the borough of Queens, New York, and when Cheung moved out, he left Yoda, a 12-year old female pug, behind. In Cheung’s last visit to his old place, he and Chan argued about the man’s plans to find a new apartment that allowed pets. According to prosecutors, the discussion got heated, and Cheung grabbed Yoda and left the apartment saying that Chan “would not have to worry about the dog anymore.” When he returned, he was empty-handed, prompting Chan to ask about the dog. Initially, Cheung said the pug had slipped, but when interrogated, he first told detectives he tripped while walking onto the balcony and the dog escaped from his hands. The man later changed his story one more time to say the pug leaped out of his arms and went through the balcony’s metal railing.
Yoda fell 70 feet to her death, landing in a six-foot distance from the curb. The forensic investigation concluded that to experience this fall, Yoda had to have been thrown 40 feet into the air, over the railing and the balcony. This finding contradicts every version offered by Cheung and seemingly proves he acted in cold blood. Urge the prosecutors to set the example and apply the maximum punishment under the law. Such acts of aggression and cruelty toward defenseless animals should not be tolerated.
Dear Mr. Brown,
A helpless 12-year old pug was allegedly murdered in your district, in a horrific, cold blood killing. The dog was reportedly thrown off a seventh-floor balcony and later tossed in a garbage bin after a couple’s heated dispute about who would take responsibility for the animal. It is infuriating that humans’ emotional instability and reckless behavior can harm innocent animals.
I am glad that the alleged suspect Yuk Cheung has been charged and arraigned and that his next court appearance is scheduled. However, I insist that in the light of evidence collected by the forensic investigation, Mr. Cheung is convicted with the maximum penalty under the law. You should send a strong message that aggression toward animals is an expression of the worst of human nature and should not be tolerated.
