Support Harsher Penalties for Animal Abusers

Target: Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell

Goal: Strengthen penalties for animal cruelty in Michigan

The Genesee County Sheriff is trying to change the penalties for animal cruelty in Michigan. Michigan has made headlines on numerous occasions in the past year for animal cruelty violations. A recent series of cases in Flint has prompted the Sheriff’s department to take action as the majority of those responsible never serve a day in prison. While the FBI has made animal abuse a felony, something needs to be done to ensure that state-level legislation and prosecution are holding up their end. Michigan Sheriff Robert Pickell deserves our support for this important cause.

Two recent cases, both in Flint, prompted Sheriff Pickell to take action. The first was an animal abuse case in which a little boy was caught repeatedly throwing a puppy on the street. The boy’s grandfather has since been accused of animal abuse, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail, though this is rarely upheld. The second case, which is still under investigation, was discovered when an officer witnessed two dogs fighting and their owner beating them.

Following the incident, he sent a letter to the state legislature asking them to make the punishment for animal cruelty more severe. He also asked for the creation of a statewide registry for animal abusers, which has been repeatedly turned down by numerous animal welfare organizations and state departments over the past two years.

With the FBI taking such a strong stance against animal abuse and neglect, now is the best time to push for stronger penalties at the state and county level. Please take a moment to sign the petition below and thank Sheriff Pickell for standing up for the animals of Genesee County and seeing to it that those who harm them are held accountable.

Dear Sheriff Pickell,

You recently submitted a letter to the Michigan State Legislature asking them to make the penalties for animal cruelty more severe. There have been numerous animal abuse cases in Michigan over the last year that have made national headlines, and it is clear that many perpetrators’s punishments are not strong enough to be a deterrent.

Thank you for your commitment to protecting animals throughout Michigan. I strongly support your initiative and hope that with your influence, animals throughout Michigan will soon have the protection they deserve.

  1. I have signed this petition because it is a good one! The FBI is backing the sheriff on this and will be getting harsher punishment for abusers of animals which is a great plus and a great start!! Hopefully soon everything will fall into place around the world and animal cruelty and animal abuse will soon be removed from the world or at least not at such a horrific senseless count that it is right now!! This is just outrageous the amount of animal cruelty and animal abuse!!
