Target: Tonight Show producers Josh Lieb and Lorne Michaels
Goal: Ban cruel wildlife exhibitors from The Tonight Show
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon continues to feature wildlife exhibitors and wild animals despite knowing about the cruelty involved in the business. Urge Tonight Show producers to keep wild animals out of such unfavorable circumstances by not allowing exhibitors on the show. Supporting the conditions these animals are living and handled in is inhumane and should not be promoted, especially by such a prominent television figure.
Jeff Musial, a frequent guest on The Tonight Show, has been repeatedly cited for animal welfare violations including denying animals adequate space, and holding primates in solitary confinement and filthy enclosures. Most recently, the show featured numerous wild animals including an elephant named Roxy, who was kidnapped from the wild as a baby. Roxy has since been shuffled from exhibitor to exhibitor to perform, including the Tarzan Zerbini Circus, which has a history of animal welfare violations. Not providing Roxy with the necessary veterinary care for a swollen foot and keeping her chained in a barn, unable to move freely, were among the violations.
Elephants like Roxy can become distressed and anxious when hauled around for entertainment. In the past, Roxy stepped on a woman and crushed her pelvis, critically injuring her. Patty Zerbini, who supplied Roxy to The Tonight Show, was also fined recently after an elephant she was exhibiting pulled a woman into the metal bars of his enclosure, causing a collapsed lung, liver and kidney lacerations, spleen damage, and several broken bones.
Roxy has previously been quarantined for tuberculosis, and has been reexposed to the disease since then. Her exhibitor has been cited for publicly exhibiting an elephant that tested positive for TB and had not completed treatment for the disease. Elephants carry the human strain of TB, which is highly transmissible to humans, even without direct contact. This is a serious health hazard considering Roxy was in such close contact with a wide audience during her appearance on The Tonight Show.
Please urge The Tonight Show producers to take a stand against animal cruelty by banning wildlife exhibitors from the show.
Dear Josh Lieb and Lorne Michaels,
I was shocked to learn that The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon continues to feature wildlife exhibitors, despite knowing about the inhumane practices prevalent in this industry. Please make a strong statement against cruelty to animals by banning wildlife exhibitors from The Tonight Show in the future.
The large and boisterous crowds can be very traumatic to animals used for entertainment, scaring them during performances. This can place the safety of the animal and the public in jeopardy. I hope that you’ll do the right thing and protect both animals and the public by banning wildlife exhibitors from your show.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
