Ban Poisons that Kill Wildlife

Target: Joe Martens, CommissionerNew York State Department of Environmental Conservation

Goal: Protect wild and domestic animals from painful deaths caused by poisoning

Poisons that have been used to kill rats in New York have also been haphazardly killing wildlife in public places like Central Park. Foxes and birds along with cats and dogs have been found dead as a result of eating rats that had ingested the poison. Conservationist groups, including the Center for Biological Diversity, are pushing for a statewide ban on these poisons.

Thirty different species have suffered deaths from the poisons. Of these species, house pets have fallen victim, as have great horned owls and golden eagles. More than 225 poisonings that go as far back as the 1980’s have been documented in reports prepared by the conservationist groups.

Reports obtained from the agency being petitioned against revealed that between 1989 and 2013, the pesticides in question had caused or contributed to the deaths of a lengthy list of birds and other animals. The list included shocking numbers like at least 50 red-tailed hawks, 47 squirrels, 36 great horned owls, 19 crows, 12 screech owls, seven Cooper’s hawks, seven deer, six foxes, three golden eagles and two coyotes. These numbers only represented animals that were found and tested. Many other animals were likely also affected by the pesticides.

By accidentally killing larger predators, these poisons are actually eliminating the natural solution to rats and other vermin. The predators of rats are now being wiped out by the poisons.

Please sign the petition below to call for the phase-out of deadly poisons that harm pets and wildlife.

Dear Mr. Martens,

It is shocking that so many animals, both wild and domesticated, have died at the hands of rat poisons deemed acceptable for use by the state. Not only have many rodents and birds dies, but foxes, deer, and even cats and dogs have been killed by these pesticides. There is no excuse for releasing a deadly pesticide to be used in public places. Please consider the ill effects of these pesticides and ban them. No animal should have to suffer death caused by pesticides.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
