Target: Keith M. Kaneshiro, Prosecuting Attorney for the City and County of Honolulu
Goal: Demand justice for over 300 animals allegedly left without food or water by shelter operators.
The owners of an animal shelter are facing hundreds of charges of animal cruelty each after a raid on the shelter found dogs living in inhumane conditions. The Friends for Life no-kill shelter in Oahu, Hawaii is accused of forcing animals to live in their own urine and feces. Officials also say that the animals were being kept without food or water in their cages.
Officials suspect that the no-kill shelter was overwhelmed with animals. Many pet owners are more likely to surrender their animals to such a shelter, but it seems the animals weren’t being re-homed at a fast enough rate, resulting in the shelter being unable to properly care for them.
There is no evidence that the shelter reached out to other no-kill facilities for help housing or adopting the animals. Since seizure, the animals have been distributed to about 200 other shelters throughout the islands for care and adoption.
The shelter’s two owners, David Lanny Moore and June Moore, have both been charged with 310 counts of animal cruelty issued by the Hawaii Humane Society. Each count carries with it a potential fine of up to $2,000 and one year of jail time.
While the hearts of these shelter owners might have been in the right place, over 300 animals were allegedly left to suffer in poor conditions without adequate food or water. In order to set an example for other shelter operators and encourage the adherence to animal welfare laws, the people responsible for this alleged cruelty must be punished. Sign the petition below to demand that the owners of this shelter are punished for their reported neglect.
Dear Mr. Kaneshiro,
Over 300 dogs were allegedly left to live in filthy conditions, surrounded by their own urine and feces. The animals were also reportedly left without food or water in their cages. Shockingly, this happened in an animal shelter, where animals are supposed to be protected from this type of alleged treatment.
In order to ensure that animal shelter operators are adhering to welfare laws, an example must be made out of the people responsible. We, the undersigned, ask you to seek a fair punishment for the owners of the shelter, if they are found guilty.
