Stop Slaughtering and Exporting Horses for Human Consumption

Target: Representative Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Leader of the House of Representatives

Goal: Ban slaughter of horses for human consumption in the U.S., and prohibit the exportation of live horses intended for human consumption.

The last horse slaughter house in the U.S. was shut down back in 2007 but it is still legal to slaughter horses for human consumption in the United States. Also thousands of unwanted horses are exported to other countries to be subjected to slaughter for human consumption. The transport is long and often without food or water. Horses do not deserve to be treated inhumanely like this. We must act now to for the sake of these neglected horses.

About 100,000 horses are shipped out to Canada, Mexico and the European Union every year. The U.S. auctions off these horses for very cheap to buyers who will send the horses to slaughter. An investigation was held at these auctions by an animal rights organization, and the findings were difficult to accept. They found that almost every buyer “demonstrated a complete lack of concern for the well-being and the welfare” of these animals and that many injured and sick horses “are often left to die alone.”

Sign this petition and urge Congress to pass the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, which would ban the consumption of horse meat in the U.S. and ban the sale of horses for known consumption or transport for consumption.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Representative Pelosi,

A bill introduced to Congress, dubbed the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, would ban the consumption of horse meat and ban the export of live horses intended for consumption.

Nearly 100,000 horses are shipped out to Canada, Mexico and the European Union for consumption every year. The horses are auctioned off at very cheap prices to “kill buyers” who send the horses to slaughter. An investigation was held at these auctions by an animal rights organization, and the information they gained is disturbing. Almost every buyer “demonstrated a complete lack of concern for the well-being and the welfare” of the horses and that many of the injured and sick horses “are often left alone to die.”

Please consider the well-being of these gentle creatures and support the SAFE Act. Not only are these animals mistreated and neglected in this cruel trade but it is also unsafe for humans to eat horse meat.

Sincerely,

  1. The lack of concern shown to these unfortunate creatures prior to their slaughter is very concerning. Their treatment at auction, as observed by an animal rights organisation is downright cruel and very upsetting to anyone with a conscience. The SAFE bill which would resolve this is not yet law. The last horse slaughter house was closed in 2007 so why is this despicable trade still continuing? Please support this bill and help to upgrade the US’s rather poor animal care record.

What horrors do tghis to horses the most severe punishment is too good for them hope they suffer torture

  3. “The only difference between a dog, cat, horse and dolphin and a cow, chicken, pig and turkey is perception. One is no more valuable than another. And yet in this culture, we hold the former animals in high esteem and the latter we brutalize for food. All animals are deserving of respect and freedom from violence. The way to respect others is veganism.”

Wow, and you think you have heard it all!!!! How disgusting and inhumane!!! Only horrible people, oops I mean monsters would eat innocent beautiful animals like horses!!

  5. This is horrific. These are companion animals….I can not believe we are so evil. Karma is right around the corner for all those who participate in this cruel act.

  6. How many people who are horrified by the treatment of these horses are happily eating meat and two veg tonight? There is no difference between the suffering of a cow and the suffering of a horse.

  7. THE GREAT HORSES ARE FRIENDS NOT FOOD NOW.
