Target: Director Ian Robertson of International Animal Law
Goal: Stop horrific chimp trafficking operation.
A distressingly huge number of chimps have been slaughtered and their babies kidnapped to be sold as pets or zoo animals in an illegal operation that has been under investigation for a year. At least ten adult chimps were killed for every baby the traffickers wanted to capture, and the dead animals were sold for their meat. Some of the babies did not even survive the transport to their wealthy clients.
The chimps rescued were found in appalling condition. Distressed, dirty, crying out in pain and fear as they were ripped from their natural habitat and forced into tiny crates. Worse, these animals are kept alive and cared for only as long as they are considered cute; many older chimps are killed once they grow up and stop being useful as cute little attractions or pets. This is disgusting, it is no way to treat an innocent animal.
The arrest of the alleged traffickers and the rescue of several baby chimps followed the official exposure of the trade, and now we must take steps to ensure the trade is broken up and ended for good. No animal deserves to be treated like this. Sign this petition to help prevent further butchering and kidnappings of innocent chimps.
Dear Director Robertson,
A trafficking ring was recently discovered in which a huge number of baby chimps were captured from their natural habitat to be sold as pets or zoo animals. In order to get their hands on the babies, traffickers killed as many as a thousand older chimps and sold their bodies as meat, while forcing the babies into tiny crates. Some of these chimps did not survive the transport to their clients.
This ring has been in existence for over a year, as that was how long it took for investigations to uncover it and arrest the traffickers. But regardless of how long it has been going on, even six months is too long to allow such crimes to go on. Those involved in the ring obtained fake permits, using money, connections and other countries’ lax attitudes on smuggling in order to carry out their operations.
This horrendous operation must be stopped completely, beyond simply arresting those allegedly discovered participating. There must be stronger laws enforced in more countries, a ban on obtaining fake permits, and the immediate arrest of anyone who attempts to continue the operation. These chimps deserve justice, and we cannot allow any more chimps to suffer like this. Please put an end to the chimp trafficking ring once and for all.
