Target: Gina McCarthy, Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Goal: Reject a request to raise the amount of pesticide that can be used in farming
The Syngenta Crop Protection LLC, a large pesticide company, is petitioning the EPA to raise the legal tolerance level for a bee-killing pesticide by as much as 4,000%. If their request is granted, they’ll be able to use more pesticides and leave far more residue of these harmful chemicals that have been linked to the sharp decline in bee populations over recent years.
Syngenta’s reasoning for this is that they want to switch to a leaf spray rather than a seed treatment, so they’ll need more leeway in the amount of scattered residue that they’re allowed to get on plants other than the targeted crops. This means that more plants will become contaminated and even more bees could become poisoned with a pesticide that weakens their immune systems and causes massive bee die-offs that are threatening our very way of life.
Bee pollination is responsible for one third of all food that we eat. Without bees, we can look forward to skyrocketing food prices, a sharp increase in global poverty, and a massive hunger problem. The European Union has already banned the pesticides that Syngenta wants to spray due to the intense harm it does to the bees that we rely on to bring us fruits, vegetables, and grains.
The EPA will be taking public comments on the proposal until October 6. By signing this petition, you send a clear message that you will not tolerate the use of more of the pesticides that have already been linked to the massive decline in bee populations, nor will you allow big corporations like Syngenta to sell out our futures for profit.
Dear Gina McCarthy,
Not long ago, studies discovered that honey bees were dying off at alarming rates, with whole colonies disappearing overnight. Because these bees are essential to the pollination and growth of vast amounts of farmed foods, the decline in bee populations is a huge concern for every person on Earth. Without bees, we’ll lose a full third of the food we eat on a regular basis in a world where millions of people already go hungry.
I understand that the Syngenta Crop Protection LLC has requested that you raise the legal tolerance levels for pesticides that have been linked to the weakened immune systems of the same honey bees that have been dying off in such massive numbers. No matter what the reason, any increase in the tolerated amounts of pesticides cannot be allowed. The European Union has already banned these pesticides for the threat they pose to both bees and the human beings they feed. We need to follow their example rather than catering to the greed of corporations that are putting profits before people.
I urge you to reject their proposal and refuse to increase the tolerance levels for any pesticides. Do not further contribute to the looming threat of widespread bee extinction and the terrible poverty and hunger that will inevitably follow. Every step you can take to protect honey bees is essential, and approving this proposal would be a step backwards.
