Target: Policarpo Napica, Liason Officer, Mozambique Ministry for the Coordination of Environmental Affairs
Goal: Applaud the government of Mozambique for their conservation efforts that led to the arrests of six poachers
Mozambique authorities have arrested six suspected poachers caught on the Niassa National Reserve, a vast wildlife reserve that has been struggling to protect elephants, rhinos, and other endangered animals from illegal hunting. Conservationists around the world are calling this a rare victory for a country that has come under recent fire for allowing its rhino population to be wiped out by poaching rings connected to the international ivory trade.
The government of Mozambique has vowed to step up the fight against poachers and protect the endangered species in its wildlife reserve, signing an agreement that created stiffer punishments for anyone caught killing a protected animal. They’re working hard to take a preventative approach to their poacher problem, using investigative methods to try and break up poaching rings rather than catch poachers after animals have already been killed. The six suspected poachers were detained after a year of investigative work. In addition to this, they’re working on deploying environmental police across the country to support efforts to patrol Niassa and other areas where endangered species live.
If these efforts continue, Mozambique will hopefully be able to avoid losing another endangered species the way it lost its rhinos. There’s still plenty of work to do, as poachers have killed 500 elephants so far in 2014. With continued pressure and encouragement, we can put an end to the poaching rings that threaten the animals of Niassa and send a message to other countries that struggle to fight these killers. Please sign this petition to send your support and approval to the government of Mozambique.
Dear Mr. Napica,
I thank you for stepping up your efforts to combat the poaching problem that wiped out your rhino population and continues to threaten the populations of your elephants and other endangered species. I understand that taking on poaching rings is a complex and difficult process, and I applaud the efforts that recently led to the arrest of six suspected poachers. I’m glad to see that your increased conservation efforts are paying off.
Protecting endangered species, including the elephants that are threatened by the international ivory trade, is an important task that has worldwide implications. The welfare of these threatened animals is very important to me, and I want to let you know that I support and appreciate your dedication to stopping poachers on a long-term basis. Please keep up the good work.
