Target: Terry Brandstad, Governor of Iowa
Goal: Don’t criminalize lying about being involved in animal rights groups on farm job applications
Two animal rights activists from the animal rights organization PETA had secretly recorded animal cruelty on a pig farm in Iowa. The abuse had included the farm workers kicking pigs repeatedly, beating them with metal rods and even shocking a crippled pig with an electric prod. After the animal rights group posted this video on the internet, the state legislature and lawmakers immediately took action, but not against the cruelty captured on the video.
Instead of addressing the blatant cruelty in the video and investigating it further, the lawmakers of Iowa have decided to make it a criminal offense to lie about being involved in animal rights groups on farm job applications. The undercover work animal rights groups do has exposed a shameful amount of cruelty on industrial farms. This law and other agricultural gag laws only work to cover up the horrible animal abuse and food safety problems.
The Iowa state legislature should be less committed to hiding animal cruelty on farms and more involved in protecting these helpless animals. These animal activists work hard to give animals a voice and Iowa lawmakers should not be so determined to silence them. Sign this petition and ask the Iowa state legislature and lawmakers not to criminalize lying about animal rights group involvement on farm job applications.
Dear Governor Terry Branstad,
I believe that the agricultural laws in your state that are determined to prevent animal rights activists from exposing the truth of animal cruelty on animal farms are counterproductive. Animal rights activists work hard to ensure that every animal has a voice and is protected, yet your state lawmakers are bent on silencing them for good.
Instead of trying to cover up the cruelty that is happening everyday in these animal farms, you should be helping end the cruelty once and for all. If not for the undercover animal rights activists, the public would not have any idea about the blatant cruelty happening to these poor animals.
If more laws continue to silence animal rights activists, then the cruelty within these farms will only become worse. I urge you to protect the animals for a change instead of their abusers. These animals are helpless and need someone who can shield them from cruelty.
