Don’t Allow Wolves to be Hunted Into Extinction

Target: Debbie Stabenow, United States Senator for Michigan

Goal: Don’t take away federal Endangered Species Act protection from wolves in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Michigan.

Endangered wolves could soon lose their protections thanks to a bill proposed by senators in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming that would remove the animals from protection under the Endangered Species Act. The management of the wolves will go to the states themselves, but two federal courts have said that these states’ management plans will not keep the wolves at the population levels that are legally required in the absence of Endangered Species Act protection. Because of the devastation this bill will cause for the wolf population, animal advocates have dubbed it the ‘War on Wolves Act.’

This new bill will be particularly devastating for wolves in Wyoming. If the bill is passed, Wyoming will be able to reinstate its cruel management program which allows for unlimited shooting of wolves across 85 percent of the state. The legislation also takes away Wyoming citizens’ right to challenge this horrifying program in court.

The senators claim that their states should have management of the wolves because wolves frequently attack their constituents’ livestock. But wolf attacks account for less than one percent of livestock deaths each year – the real dangers are inclement weather and disease. Studies also show that indiscriminately killing wolves could lead to more conflicts between wolves and livestock because the killing disrupts and disperses stable wolf packs.

If the War on Wolves Act succeeds, it could lead to a drastic decline in the United States’ native wolf population. The management of these wolves should not be given to states who will allow the animals to be hunted into extinction. Sign this petition to demand that the wolves of Wyoming, Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin keep their federal protection.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Stabenow,

The management of the wolves in Wisconsin, Michigan, Wyoming, and Minnesota should not revert back to the states themselves. These wolves need federal protection in order to keep them safe from hunters who will indiscriminately shoot them. Giving the states management of the wolves will be completely devastating in Wyoming in particular. If Wyoming takes over management of the wolves, hunters will be able to kill an unlimited number of wolves in 85 percent of the state.

A 2016 study shows that most Americans have either positive or very positive views on wolves. In 2014, a statewide study of 9,000 Wisconsinites showed that most people in the state believe wolves are an important part of Wisconsin’s ecosystem, and they are proud to be one of the few states that has wild wolves. These studies show that most Americans are against the indiscriminate killing of wolves, including citizens in states that will be affected by the new legislation.

If these new bills are passed, it will be absolutely devastating for the wolf population in the United States. To save these wolves from a drastic population decline, please do not take away Endangered Species Act protection from wolves in Wyoming and the Great Lakes Region.

Sincerely,

  3. Tina shurtleff says:

This is an unnecessary act of selfish cruelty to a highly intelligent predator that belongs. The only reason to kill these animals is so hunters can drink beer, and shoot elk. Do not claim to be Christian and slaughter gods wildlife

  4. It seems government won’t be satisfied until every living wolf, coyote, wild horse and basically all our wildlife is exterminated, it’s devastating.
