Justice for Baby Dolphin Killed By Tourist Harassment

Target: Mauricio Macri, President of Argentina

Goal: Strengthen the protection of wildlife in tourist areas.

A baby dolphin died in agony when a group of tourists in Buenos Aires allegedly dragged it from the water to touch it and take selfies with it. A witness to the scene said the tourists essentially let the poor dolphin die. This is the second time a dolphin has died due to tourist harassment in Argentina.

Incidents like this should not happen. Unfortunately, the story of tourists getting harmfully friendly with wildlife has become a common one — people touching or feeding wild animals, often for the sake of capturing a video or picture to post on social media. Less than a year ago, another dolphin died under similar circumstances in Santa Teresita, Argentina. The Argentine Wildlife Foundation (Fundación Vida Silvestre) issued a public reminder of how vulnerable wild animals are, but it seems very few people, if any, have heeded this warning.

Using these particularly tragic incidents as an example, we must strengthen our resolve to protect dolphins and other wild animals from tourist harassment. Sign this petition to demand that Argentinian authorities implement and enforce more thorough education initiatives, signage, and penalties for harmfully interacting with wildlife.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Macri,

A baby dolphin in San Bernardo was allegedly dragged from the water, dying in agony while a group of tourists petted it and tried to take selfies with it. Sadly, this is the second time a dolphin has died in Argentina due to tourist harassment.

Tourists need to understand that dolphins and other wildlife are not novelties created for their amusement. These animals should be able to live in peace in their natural habitats, without being threatened by uninformed visitors. Fascination with wildlife is understandable, and an important part of appreciating nature, but it goes too far when tourists impose themselves in ways that are harmful to animals, such as touching, feeding, or removing them from their habitats.

Please implement and enforce stronger protection laws to ensure that incidents like this will not happen again. Wild animals deserve to be treated with respect and care, and tourists must understand that there will be penalties for overstepping these bounds.

Sincerely,

Dolphins and other marine life should never be taken out of the water for any reason. Now another helpless baby dolphin has died as a result of human abuse. This has to stop. Dolphins have close family units and interfering with the natural process of their way of life can create grief for the mother who loses her baby. It’s cruel and abusive and must be stopped. Please implement and enforce stronger laws to protect them from tourists and others who do not care about the damage/death caused to these animals. They are not for the entertainment of humans who don’t care about their well being.
