Force Kentucky to Strengthen Animal Protections

Target: Matt Bevin, Governor of Kentucky

Goal: Force Kentucky to reform its laws concerning animal cruelty to protect the lives of animals.

For the tenth year in a row, Kentucky has placed dead last in the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s annual report. These rating systems are based off the amount of protections animals have, and the kind of punishments and deterrents the state has in place for those committing crimes of animal cruelty. Kentucky must be made to strengthen its laws protecting animals.

Currently, there are many provisions which other states have that Kentucky does not. Vets in Kentucky are not allowed to report cases of animal abuse, and even if there was a case of abuse or neglect, the offender would not be a felon under state law unless dog fighting was involved. If someone is convicted of cruelty, they are not forced to remove any animals from their possession. All three of these things are not the case in most U.S. states.

The lack of protection for animals under Kentucky state law is appalling. There is no value or concern put toward the lives of these animals. Countless studies show that those who commit crimes against an animal once in their life are for more like to commit that same crime toward another animals or even human later. Kentucky is not taking the right precautions towards protecting its citizens and their beloved pets. Sign this petition to make sure Kentucky changes its laws towards animal cruelty and begins to value the lives of these living, feeling creatures.

Dear Governor Bevin,

Your state has once again ranked dead last in the ALDF annual report. Although the ALDF did admit that your laws have somewhat improved since last year’s report, your continued lack of protections for animals is outrageous. The value that you are putting on the lives of these living creatures is nothing, and that needs to be changed.

There must be the possibility of cruelty being a felony, even when not involving dog fighting. Vets need to be able to report cases of animal cruelty and neglect, or else animals will continue to get hurt. Animals need to be taken away from those convicted of animal cruelty-related crimes.

Use your power to make sure that Kentucky isn’t last in next year’s ALDF report. Set an example for further administrations in your state to protect the lives and well being of our beloved animals. The pets of your state deserve more than they are currently being given, and you can start to give them the respect they deserve.
