Target: Rick Sparks, Franklin County Attorney
Goal: Severely punish the teens allegedly responsible for abducting and kicking a senior dog while filming the act.
Three teenagers in the capital city of Frankfort, KY allegedly filmed themselves after abducting a 16-year old dog from its backyard. In the four-second graphic video, they appear to laugh and crack jokes while mercilessly kicking the tiny eight-pound dog in the head. The video was later posted on social media, where it has since sparked national outrage.
The dog shown in the video, Opal, is an Italian greyhound who is recovering from the trauma inflicted on her. While she is fortunate not to have suffered serious physical harm, her owner reports that she is now nervous and fearful to go outside. Italian greyhounds are particularly susceptible to traumatic injuries, due to their slight builds and fragile bones. With her advanced age, Opal is very lucky to have not been hurt worse from the brutal kicks to her skull.
Since the video has gained notoriety online, the three teens are now under investigation and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department has expressed shock and dismay over the act. Kentucky’s track record on animal abuse cases has been decried as the worst in the nation, so we must be certain that justice is served in this heinous crime. The individuals who allegedly attacked this dog, and had the gall to post their actions on social media, must be held accountable. Add your voice to ensure that they are brought to justice.
Dear Mr. Sparks,
A geriatric dog was allegedly kidnapped from her own yard and kicked on film by three teenagers in Kentucky’s capital city. This act was heinous and disgusting, and the graphic film is difficult to watch. The fact that this film was posted to social media demonstrates a lack of empathy or shame on the part of the attackers.
It is obvious to we, the undersigned, that these teenagers must be held accountable for their apparently malicious actions. The Commonwealth of Kentucky must do more to stand up for the welfare of its animals, given the appalling statistics going back over a decade that make it the worst state in the nation in terms of animal abuse. Cases like this cannot go unpunished. We are calling on you to seek the maximum penalties under juvenile law for the three suspects, to prevent further harm to innocent animals.
