Justice for Terrified Dog Transported in Open Trailer on Highway

Target: Rick Staly, Flagler County Sheriff

Goal: Do not allow owners to chain dogs to open trailers while driving on the highway.

Video was captured showing a dog chained on top of a crate carrying another animal, on an open trailer being pulled at high speeds down the highway. According to the couple who took the video, the dog looked “terrified.”

The video was posted on Facebook, and dog’s owner responded to the post and also contacted Flagler Animal Services, who determined that the dog is being “well cared for.” The unnamed owner received a ticket for only using one tether instead of two, but this manner of transporting animals is legal under Flagler County law. This law, which states that dogs can be transported in open air if there is a pen or at least two tethers, should not apply to travel where excessive speeds can cause extreme discomfort and very clear danger to the dogs, like on highways. Sign below to protect defenseless dogs and demand this law be changed.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Sheriff Staly,

A circulating video showing a dog chained to an open crate on a Florida highway raises concerns about the health and well-being of animals in Flagler County. This type of transport is currently legal if the dog is in a pen or chained with at least two tethers, but it is extremely dangerous to allow this method of travel on highways or in other high-speed environments that pose a threat to the dogs’ safety.

It is unacceptable and cruel to subject animals to this type of treatment and cause them this sort of pain and fear. I urge you to take steps to alter this law and restrict this dangerous transport of defenseless animals.

Sincerely,

  1. How about updating your law? I think it may be prudent.
