Target: Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, Mansoor Ahmad Mir
Goal: Applaud the ban of all religious animal sacrifice within the state of Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh, a state in Northern India, has banned all religious animal sacrifice within its area of jurisdiction. This is a leap for animal rights within India because prior to this ruling, thousands of animals within the state were killed annually in the name of religion. Sacrificing animals for religious rituals is archaic and extremely abusive to the animal victims. Finally, after years of this barbaric practice, innocent animals will now be safe from religious harm within Himachal Pradesh.
This ban came about after many protests from animal activists within Himachal Pradesh. Activists insisted that the practice of religious animal sacrifice has no place in a modern society. The court ruled in this favor, stating that killing an innocent animal to satisfy a deity is unjust. Of course, many people within the state disagree with this recent ruling, arguing that the court is overstepping its bounds and interfering with practices that have been a part of India’s culture for generations. Sheep and goats were once sacrificed to appease Hindu deities at the beginning of the winter season; religious individuals accustomed to this massacre must now find another way to satisfy their gods.
Killing any living being in the name of religion is barbaric and should not be tolerated. This ruling will surely serve as a monumental turning point for those who practice the Hindu religion in Himachal Pradesh. Applaud the high court of the state for this ruling and encourage it to keep animal welfare prominent in its future rulings.
Dear Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir,
Recently, the court ruled in favor of victimized animals within the state of Himachal Pradesh. After countless generations of customary religious animal sacrifice, this archaic practice is henceforth banned. Thank you for understanding that killing animals in the name of religion is inhumane.
I understand that many religious individuals within Himachal Pradesh feel their religious freedoms are being encroached upon. However, there are many other non-violent methods to worship a deity. Please continue to keep animal welfare at the forefront of the discussion, no matter the push-back you receive. The victimized sheep and goats of the state do not deserve a sacrificial fate. Instead, the animals deserve respect and freedom from the beliefs of humans.
