Success: China Bans Ivory Trade

Target: President of China, Xi Jinping

Goal: Thank Chinese government for banning all ivory trading.

The Chinese government announced that it will be banning all ivory commerce in the country by the end of 2017. The government plans to shut down the ivory market in phases throughout the year. This will begin with all legal ivory processing factories, which will have to close their doors by March 31. By the end of 2017, ivory trading in China will be completely prohibited. The Chinese government’s decision comes after years of tireless work from animal advocates, including members of the ForceChange community who signed and shared petitions like this one.

Due to conflict in Central Africa, elephant poaching has been increasing. Now, scientists say that for the first time in years, more elephants are killed than are born, resulting in the elephant population steadily decreasing. Demand for ivory in China is one of the reasons why poachers continue thriving. China currently has the world’s largest ivory market, and wildlife researchers estimate that between 50 to 70 percent of all ivory ends up in China. Ending legal ivory commerce in China could help save elephants from disappearing altogether.

The Chinese government has made the right choice by banning ivory in their country. Sign this petition to thank President Xi Jinping for standing up for elephants, and for not allowing poachers to make a profit in his country any longer.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Xi Jinping,

I’m writing to thank you for putting a ban on ivory trading in your country. I also applaud your decision to have all ivory commerce shut down within the next year. China has the world’s largest ivory market, with an estimated 50 to 70 percent of all ivory in the world going to China. By banning ivory, you’ll help stop poaching, which has decimated the elephant population in Central Africa.

Banning ivory in China is the right choice, and it will save the lives of countless elephants. Thank you for putting an end to the cruel ivory industry in China. Now, I urge you to continue carefully enforcing the ban to ensure that no illegal ivory makes its way into your country.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

  1. LETS HOPE THEY ACTUALLY MAKE IT WORK, AND NOT TURN A BLIND EYE TO IT, SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

  2. simon rickman says:

do we believe them? do we f . . . i read they want the elephants and rhino to go extinct so that their existing stock of ivory will increase in ‘value’. how sick is that?

  3. So when will China ban the tiger bone trade, bear bile trade, rhino horn trade, cat and dog meat trade, the fur trade (that also includes cats and dogs), and introduce proper animal welfare laws?

One tiny little baby step amongst all the other gross inhumane activities that goes on in that country isn’t good enough.

    • Let’s not forget the Baby Elephants that have “recently” been sent to China from Africa, and is still going on!
I refuse to thank them for their allowance of Torture that they have known about for many years!

  4. CHINA BAN IT NOW!!!!!…. YOU SHOULD HAVE BANNED THIS WICKED SLAUGHTER OF THESE BEAUTIFUL INNOCENT ANIMALS WHEN POACHING FIRST BEGAN….DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE END OF 2017 WHEN THERE WILL BE A HUGE INCREASE IN THESE SUB HUMAN INDIVIDUALS THAT WILL KILL HUNDREDS MORE ELEPHANTS AND ALL FOR GAIN,…FOR CHRIST SAKE STOP THIS SLAUGHTER AND STOP IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!

  5. David Lavery says:

As the Chines encourage poaching and cruelty I wont be thanking them.

  7. Lisa Leonard says:

I agree China does to much unbelievable harm to animals. I will continue to ban anything from China. Free the bears and stop eating dogs and cats. Basically stop being monsters!!

  8. Rebecca Martello says:

Please enforce the ban and protect elephants. AND take another step and ban the Yulin Festival and the dog/cat meat industry in its entirely. It’s appalling.

  9. Dear President Xi Jinping: My heartfelt ‘thanks’ for making the right decision to ban Ivory in your Country. This decision makes China an even greater Country! Hopefully in the near future, China will also ban the cruel industry of dog and cat eating…

  10. Patrice schmitz says:

China needs a major overhaul in improving it’s treatment of all animals. NOW

  11. Ginger Neimo says:

Never believe it. They will still do it- but will be smart about it and hush it all up.

  12. Rosslyn Osborne says:

I sincerely hope that this will happen in the stages printed out in the above letter. I would have like it to have happened 20 years ago though.
Your country is so slack in every area of animal rights and this is so sad for a country moving forward so rapidly in most areas. Your own people are appalled at the heinous atrocities being imposed on animals and find it a huge embarrassment.
The old baseless superstitions with horrific cruelty against animals for medicines etc is ridiculous in this day and age.
Please teach compassion and empathy for Animal Welfare in every school, based on scientific proofs and protection of each countries unique animals, and how important they are.
We can all but watch and wait to see if you really mean what you say on the above issues. We know you can do this and do it well. Thank you.

  13. Stephanie Geyser says:

Let’s hope that China honours this commitment, and it isn’t just an empty promise, like Japan does with whaling.

  14. We don´t need to praise the Chinese decision, but to punish them for consuming ivory, shark, turtle, pangolin, and fish and oysters in a compulsory way contributing to desapear many species in the world. Chinese consumption (as American, European, Japanese and Arabic consumption) is taking humanity to an end.

  15. Looking forward to this. All lives do matter!
